Borderline Personality Disorder and College

I'm in college and I struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder. The disorder has effected me in school in so many ways.

For starters my emotional instability makes it hard to be consistent with my attendence and performance. Some days, I'm excited and ready to take on the semester, but then inevitably, my mood drops and I can't even get out of bed. Being unable to get out of bed makes it hard to go to class and do your school work. If you look at my college transcript you'll see one semester where my GPA is above a 3.0, and then the next it's below a 2.0 and it's just been back and forth for years!

I've been in school since 2009 (so 8 years) and I'm still not done yet. My instability destroying my GPA is just a part of what's kept me from graduating, but add in the ever changing sense of identity. When I first went to college I was going to study psychology and pre-med to become a psychiatrist, then I switched to Biology and Education to be a Biology Teacher, but that was too much work, so I dropped education and thought I'd become a biologist, but then I realized that's not what I want to do, and so I dropped out of one school, took a year off, and explored options. When I went back to school I planned on studying behavioral neuroscience, but then once I started taking neuroscience classes I learned that wasn't for me. Now I'm just studying psychology with hopes of going to grad school to become a DBT therapist. I have my doubts though. Is this career choice really right for me? Am I cut out for the job? Can I even get accepted into grad school? Will I even be able to pass grad school? Will my disorder keep me from doing what I think I want to do with my life?

This is just a glimpse of what I've struggled with and what I'm still working through. This semester is a struggle, but I'm determined to get through it because if I can get through this semester and next semester I can graduate in December... so there's finally an end in sight for me.

This is my story of being a college student with BPD... what's your story? What have you tried that has been helpful (or not) to get through college with BPD?

I also found this article to really resonate with my experience with BPD as a college student.

just throwing this out there, the sponsorship program might be good for someone with bpd starting or in college. <3
