BPD Ups and downs
Hello,
I've recently been diagnosed with BPD and I feel like everything goes downhill, my Dr gave me my medication and now I'm waiting to start therapy but I just have days when it feels like something is ripping me apart from the inside out, or I feel extremely angry for small reasons or I just want to do nothing at all. Could someone (maybe who goes through the same feelings)please help me with some adviceon how to handle all this feelings?
Thank you in advance!
I feel ya. Idk if iam bipolar or not....but I feel the same way
Dear Walker,
living with BPD for me has been sometimes hard, sometimes even fulfilling journey. I am still learning how to deal with my symptoms but those small victories over intense feelings have brought me so much joy. I wish you the same. Even though at the beginning it is easy to feel discouraged, with time I believe you will find many benefits of therapy and your life will be richer, you yourself more humane. Aside from right medication and counseling sessions, what helps me a lot are DBT workbooks. Cognitive-behavior therapy as well as Dialectical Behavior Therapy are focused on skills that are not so hard to learn and can be a real game changer. Now, I am keeping a small pocket notebook which I can carry everywhere and which contains skills I have found helpful among which is: safe place vizualization, REST technique and cognitive rehersal, but those are just the ones I find helpful currently.
I wish you luck!!
I have Borderline Personality Disorder too. It's hard to deal with they extreme mood swings. I don't like the medications because they make me sleepy, but I take them as per doctors orders. Instead of going thru extreme ups and downs (stormy seas) my medications make me feel flat (calm water).
Try to find a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy group. It's hard to find a good one that is covered by insurance, so start looking and don't give up. DBT is more like a college course to teach you coping skills, than like regular group therapy. The idea is as you learn coping skills you put those skills in your tool box. Then if you are feeling stressed you can reach into your tool box and pull out the right tool for that situation.
It takes a while of guided practice and maybe taking the DBT course a few time before 'finding the right tool' becomes automatic.
As someone with BPD, I definitely find DBT useful! There’s so many coping skills and strategies to try when feeling completely overwhelmed. Specifically, I find that TIPP skills help me the most when dealing with those feelings you described (you can google DBT TIPP skills to find a thorough explanation of what it is and how to use them). If for some reason you are unable to get into an official DBT program, there are free DBT skill books online where you can quickly self-learn the material. I also frequently use a skill called opposite action which helps me when feeling stuck dealing with extreme impulses. It’s tough, and BPD sucks, but over time it can and will get easier to deal with the hard feelings as long as you take put in the work. My messages are always open if you need someone :)
Hey there. I have been suffering from BPD for a few years now and I recently got diagnosed. I think it's all part of the condition that's making you feel this way. I used to and I still do feel what you described. What has helped me was to keep telling myself to get through one day at a time. I don't plan far ahead or think too much I just try to do what I have to do now and try to do it. And please know that it is okay to take a break and be by yourself. Do what you love. I have found that trying out simple things makes you feel better. For example I like to eat this one particular kind of candy. So I make it a habit to buy myself one occasionally and it makes me happy. I think we need to find comfort in little things. We didn't do this ourselves, it's something that happened to us. But we have control over what we are going to do about it.
