DBTuesday: a new forum section
Dear lovely PD Support Subcom,
I am excited to invite you to this new forum section dedicated to DBT Skills.
DBT stands for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, which is a specific type of evidence-based cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy developed in the late 1980s by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan to help better treat borderline personality disorder. Since then, DBT has also been used successfully for the treatment of other kinds of mental health conditions such as depression, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders.
The theory behind the DBT approach is that some people are prone to react in a more intense manner toward certain emotional situations. DBT theory suggests that some peoples arousal levels in such situations can increase far more quickly than the average persons, attain a higher level of emotional stimulation, and take a significant amount of time to return to baseline arousal levels. DBT skills are designed to help in the task of coping with these sudden, intense surges of emotion. The overall aim of DBT is to achieve a balance between empathy and acceptance, while staying focused on changing problem behaviors.
The skills belong to four different components: mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. Mindfulness and distress tolerance skills focus on acceptance, while emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills focus on change.
Over the next few weeks, we will focus on different DBT skills and see how they can be incorporated into our life. We will be posting weekly (usually on Tuesday, starting from next week). Make sure to add yourself to our taglist if you want to be notified of posts in this forum section.
Please bear in mind that this series of posts cannot be considered a substitute for DBT therapy, or any other form of therapy.
