To a Laughing Dove
O Dove! What surprises this time?
With first light of dawn, thou comest and crown
With thy laugh the yellow budding blossoms;
Or with Drongos dark thou curb all face frown
With window knocks, lest mornings mourn
And the goer goes; Thou art hope when down
The sun wither in dawn's dark, thy hymns art 'tis rise.
O Dove! Where art surprises this time?
When ravens in afternoon bring bad omen
To dead skies, when pigeons dull the trumpets
Yellow, with sunlight thou rest in thy den
Of shadowed balustrade rails, Thirsty thou
Land on bird bath, Or thy grace playing cools men
By the window grills; Or thy kiss to thy love charms them.
O Dove! How many surprises now?
When afternoon Ravens leave sky in evening,
Thy return returns 'tis charm back; Thou plunge
To sun with bee-eaters green, or seen cooing
Among yellow blossom leaves, thy flights
Cover cool pall to sunlight sinking, thy rising
Away high for morrow beautiful saves a longing.
