I went to climb
a willow tree, and when
I got to it, the branches drooped
almost reaching the soft earth over
its roots. I grabbed a branch, ropelike
and hanging, waiting for a climber.
Sitting in the canopy, a dragonfly
zips past my ear. The
monster I ran from
looks so small
from up
here.

Mother
My Mother
Why must you cry for me?
I live, I breathe,
And yet you mourn my loss.
My loss.
Mother,
You have nothing to mourn.
It is mine.
I am mine.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place
I can’t catch my breath, can’t slow down
Pieces of me fall away
I’m left with only a part of what I was
Unable, incapable, less-than
I may never be able to go back
At least the path is straight when the only way is down
