Romanticising Relocation (Again)

I laid on the floor,

Boxes packed tight,

Stared at the sun—

Always, too bold, too bright

My eyes burned gold,

I squinted low,

Through wet lashes—

A hundred rainbows

A deep breath in,

The air so plain...

Oh, here we go,

Here we go again...

@azurePond

Again another very different voice from the great poet AurePond. It is so clipped and condensed. It gives the impression of a void of words, either through the exhaustion of all possible things to say or the tight restraint of not letting those held within have a voice.

The rhyme scheme and staccato syllabic structure further adds to the atmosphere of the unsaid. I loved the imagery which seems to blend the celestial with the narrator, blurring the line between whether they are talking about their surroundings or themselves; "Stared at the sun- Always, too bold, too bright. My eyes burned gold".

The theme of new beginnings is tinged with the references of sorrow and possible regret, and it sounds like the narrator is looking towards the future not with expectation but with resignation. Not in a melancholic sort of way, but perhaps more with the jaded gaze that can perceive only repeated patterns.

I really like it a lot. It is very different from many of your poems.

@BastionKnight Oooh I missed this!  * spends 20 minutes fangirling and shrieking over Sir Knight’s analysis*

Thank you so much, Sir Knight * bows*

I really liked what you said about blending the celestial with the narrator... that’s such a lovely way of putting it. I think you were talking about the part with rainbows on the lashes which came from tears. You can actually squint at the sun with wet lashes and see little rainbows — it truly felt celestial to me. It’s such an ordinary thing, yet for me as someone who hardly ever cries, it was one of those rare and significant moments.

Sorrow, regret, melancholy, the jaded gaze… Yes yes yes.

Yes this poem is quite different from most of my others — fewer metaphors, less ambiguity, more direct. What you see  (or in this case, what you read) is what you get. It’s one of the most honest poems I’ve ever written and lately, my writing has been leaning more in that direction.

Thank you again for reading and commenting, Sir Knight * bows again *
