The Pawn Promotion

I have nothing to offer—
No coin for the kingdom,
Though my name is etched in gold
In the ledgers of wars I never chose
All I have is this frayed thread of loyalty—
A tether worn thin by the weight of your wars

I stumble like a ghost through bloodied fields,
A shadow stitched from the sinew of dead horses
And the splintered bones of those who once called me family
My veins run with gunpowder and rust,
My skin a map of scars leading nowhere

The blade in my hand is a crooked fang,
Forged in the fires of a blacksmith’s despair,
Its edge dulled by the weight of crowns I cannot bear
It trembles in my grip—
Not from fear,
But from the memory of every throat it failed to slit.

I crawl across the board,
A pawn with no motherland to protect,
No worthy king to serve
The squares are slick with the oil of forgotten machines,
The air thick with the stench of rotting banners
This is not a game of strategy
But of survival—
A slow, grinding descent into the maw of a beast
That has already swallowed the sun

Yet still, you are all I have,
And yet, you are a hollow thing—
A crown of thorns wrapped in a flag I no longer recognize
But I am nothing without a cause.

So I turn the knife upon myself—
Not for honor, not for redemption,
But because the only victory left
Is the one you cannot take from me

The blade sinks deep,
A pawn's final act of defiance.

And as the blood pools beneath me,
I see the board for what it truly is—
A graveyard of broken pieces,
Where even kings like you are buried nameless.

@Tinywhisper11 Wow, that’s such a huge compliment—I don’t even know what to say! Shakespeare is in a league of his own (I don't even dream of being compared to him), but it truly means a lot that my writing spoke to you in that way. Thank you for your kindness, Tinywhisper and for seeing something special in my words 💗💗

@azurePond

First; another excellent poem, of course.

Second, I agree and resonate with this. It's important to remember those we compare ourselves to are often flawed themselves. There is always a bigger fish. So we strive to surpass them and in doing so we sometimes realize what a cruel joke it was to consider them to be so much higher above us.

@Dingleboop Thank you so much Dingleboop.  You put it perfectly—there’s always a bigger fish, and sometimes the ones we look up to aren’t as untouchable as they seem. The pursuit of surpassing them can be eye-opening in ways we don’t expect. I’m really glad this resonated with you, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

@azurePond

*Applauds enthusiastically*

Loved it! The emotional journey this poem traverses is fantastic, and I wholeheartedly agree with @Tinywhisper11 that it feels like it carries the gravitas of a Shakespearean soliloquy. I loved how the first stanza sets up this empty feeling of battered and faded glory. From the very first line we are shown we are at rock bottom: "I have nothing to offer-". And we are given foreshadowing of the themes which are to be explored, namely conflict and identity through commitment.

The second stanza then has the narrator thrust straight to to the front of that metaphorical stage, delivering a stinging self reflection and a subtle rebuke to the actors which have brought them to this state. The strong alliteration of S makes the entire stanza feel hissed and spat. Bitter aggression delivered with force.

The metaphors of the paraphernalia of war and statecraft, as well as chess really heighten the stressful sense of being swept up in power-plays beyond ones control, in which we are forced to act out of a sense of duty. Subsuming ones will to the role of the loyal, only to have that identity fragment, fray, and ultimately dissolve when the meaning behind such commitment is lost.

The final three stanza take things up a greater notch; the drama of desperation. Not the hand wringing sort, but the complete and utter bleakness of perfect clarity. When the only action is to take ones fate in hand. And the further perfect vision granted by removing that final veil and seeing that those one placed on pedestals are as imperfect and unworthy as the lives they used and cast aside.

It was wonderful! I loved it! I was reminded so much of Ran by Akira Kurosawa (perhaps for the very Shakespearean overtones as well as the eastern philosophical and cultural motifs I saw similarities with). Now I think on it more, I see parallels with some of his other works too. No wonder this poem appeals to me so much!

@BastionKnight Thank you so much, Bastian Knight. * Bows *
Your analysis, as always, is thorough and generous with praise.

Logically, I know my work isn’t anywhere near the level of Shakespeare or Kurosawa, but emotionally? I’m all over the place—in the best way. You truly made my day.

Akira Kurosawa is someone I deeply admire—one of the first filmmakers I was introduced to. I even attempted to write a poem in the ' Rashomon style '  once.  * Attempted * being the key word here.

So, truly, thank you.

Pish and fie to that doubt masquerading as logic. Never sell yourself short. It makes me happy to think anything I said pleased you, but it was all very much deserved I assure you.

This is one of the better poems I've read here since joining Cups.

I also like the message in the ending verses... "Even death is better than being a pawn in someone else's game." Indeed.

@slowdecline48 Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really glad the message resonated with you. That line holds a special meaning for me — it's about reclaiming agency, even in the face of despair. Your feedback means a lot! 😊
