The court speaks
The echo of the gym create a very fond memory of breaking the silence
Young women lace sneakers, hands nervous with their history,
The fond scent of wood and effort flow with their movements,
The light you see is the hope for the future to come,
And through the many voices, whispered, volumised to become prominent in sound,
Not loud but enough to be heard
This sound kept going until it was heard.
They said we can't do it,
no running, no competing, no actions beyond cheering,
But the ball is still being bounded; thud-thud,
Bessie’s plans create a wall so there is nothing stopping it
Anna’s game creates the willingness to do it
And Mary’s education expanded on to a whole new gender.
The struggle was harsh
But the win was so sweet and refreshing,
The commitment was a challenge but it does not stop them
History told them no,
a towering wall,
but they asked, why not?!
The writing has been changed
The commitment, the efforts all of it
as if the past wanted this all to happen
And the court remains still
not just the structure of it in SUNY Cortland
But the symbol of what it means, it echoes throughout.
The voices,
Became the foundation of what is to come.
