4 Ways to Soothe Your Professional Competence Anxiety

"A common form of anxiety is being anxious about your professional competence.
You might have thoughts like the following, or your anxiety may be milder and intermittent:
- Am I good at my job?
- Are my peers at work better than me?
- Will I succeed in the ways that are important to me?
- Is the work I do valuable?
- Will my imperfections eventually be discovered?
Soothing Self-Talk for Professional Competence Anxiety
1. "My flaws and weaknesses don't make me incompetent."
2. "My peers may be better than me at some aspects of our role, but that doesn't mean I'm terrible."
3. "I'm having the 'confidence wobbles' today."
4. "I'm going to express my deepest values through my approach to my work."
Using your values as your compass will help stop you from getting sucked or suckered into other people's values (such as the values of "hustle culture").
How Can You Tell If Your Self-Talk is Effective?
@comfortableNight4463 I have felt anxious about my work performance before! I think this could also stem into my academic performance. I always used to feel really embarrassed when I didn't do well on an exam and I had to meet with the professor. It was like I disappointed them. I know that's not really true, but I've always been a teacher's pet 😂 I think I also feel anxious when my boss comes to supervise me at work. I know it's not to judge me, but to make me the best I can be. I just remember to do my best and everything will be fine!
@fruityPond7887 I relate to this so much. I was an over-achiever at school and if I got a mark lower than expected, I thought the world was going to end. I couldn't face my teachers if I felt I had disappointed them. We are doing our best and that is enough.
@comfortableNight4463 You're so right! Honestly, I just learned to tell myself that at the end of the day, I still got my degree! While GPA matters here and there, hard work is what will carry us the rest of our lives!
@fruityPond7887 Exactly! Also I think with experience, GPA wouldn't be taken to account later on. You did it! That's what matters most.
@comfortableNight4463 facing this a lot right now. Thank you for the article <3

Yes I have! Plenty of times, I had to adapt the mindset "Fake it till you make it" and it just go easier with time as I developed coping strategies to handle pressure and work load
@professionalVision2624 That is a good approach. I tend to do that too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Yes that mentality is always good to have, but I can only use it short-term else I get imposter syndrome haha
