“It is not as commonly known that the heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart! Moreover, these heart signals have a significant effect on brain function – influencing emotional processing and higher cognitive faculties such as attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving. In other words, not only does the heart respond to the brain, but the brain continuously responds to the heart.” (Doc Childre, founder of HeartMath)

Different patterns of heart activity (which accompany different emotional states) have distinct effects on cognitive and emotional function. During stress and negative emotions, when the heart rhythm pattern is erratic and disordered, the corresponding pattern of neural signals traveling from the heart to the brain inhibits higher cognitive functions. This limits our ability to think clearly, remember, learn, reason, and make effective decisions.

“From our research at the HeartMath Institute, we've concluded that intelligence and intuition are heightened when we learn to listen more deeply to our own heart. It’s through learning how to decipher messages we receive from our heart that we gain the keen perception needed to effectively manage our emotions in the midst of life’s challenges. The more we learn to listen to and follow our heart intelligence, the more educated, balanced, and coherent our emotions become. Without the guiding influence of the heart, we easily fall prey to reactive emotions such as insecurity, anger, fear, and blame as well as other energy-draining reactions and behaviors.”

What I have learned from the article

  • Heart influences perceptions, emotions, intuition, and health. It is a key component of the emotional system.

  • Many ancient cultures, including the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks, referred to the heart as a source of intelligence.

  • Positive emotions were found to increase order and balance in the nervous system and produce smooth, harmonious heart rhythms. They not only reduce stress but also enhance people’s ability to clearly perceive the world around them.”

This is an incredibly unique and compelling question!!

I first came across the HeartMath company myself when one of my therapists used biofeedback for treatment.

At any rate, I feel like a combination of having gratitude, savoring positive experiences, and re-framing negative experiences could go a long way for myself towards cultivating more positive emotions in my life.

Practicing gratitude is one way to focus on positivity more! I think it's hard to do especially when we always are looking to achieve goals and feel as if we need something to be complete. But appreciating what we already have is one way we can bring more positive outlooks on our life.
