Can You Really Become Addicted to Sleep?
“When it becomes almost impossible to open your eyes in the morning, or you find yourself struggling to get through the day without a nap, you may start to wonder: Is sleep addiction a real thing?
However, excessive drowsiness could be a sign of another issue. For instance, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety or certain medications can have a similar effect.
Currently, no academic paper recognizes sleep as an addiction, Bodiu notes. However, she adds that excessive sleeping can be caused by other conditions.
“Hypersomnias are recognized sleep disorders characterized by long sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or both,” Potter says. Excessive daytime sleepiness can also be caused by other conditions. You may also be excessively tired due to poor sleeping habits, a disrupted sleep schedule, or behaviors during the day. Another possible reason you feel addicted to sleep could be related to a mental health condition.”
My Takeaways From This Article
Although there aren't recognized negatives of oversleeping in itself it can be a sign of other conditions and underlying issues such as lack of proper quality sleep, malnutrition and hormone imbalances.
Personally, I had times when I would sleep for almost half a day and feel persistent tiredness throughout. My doctor ran blood work and saw I was Vitamin D deficient which can lead to such symptoms (supporting the idea that oversleeping may be a symptom to compensate for certain deficiencies).
Additionally, mental health may be a strong factor in affecting sleepiness and sleep amount. Studies show that patients suffering with depression may struggle with either insomnia (lack of sleep) or hypersomnia in which they sleep more than 10 hours per day. This goes to show the intricacies and complexities of sleep with our health (both physical and mental).

Have you ever struggled with oversleeping or persistent fatigue? What do you think are some ways that can affect your sleep?
I have been struggling with oversleeping and persistent fatigue for a long time. I have vitamin D deficiency as well, so I think this might be one of the reasons. I have been also dealing with some mental issues that also contributed to my oversleeping.
@sunnyWriting4806 I think I have definitely struggled with oversleeping. For me, it's one of my best coping skills for my anxiety because it just turns off my racing mind for a little while. I think I become so exhausted from thinking constantly about everything that I just crash sometimes. I've found that after I've been stressed about something for weeks on end that I end up sleeping for almost a day at a time lol. It's not good, but I'm just doing my best.

Thanks for sharing that with us! I agree sleeping can be one of the only escapes one might have when going through a difficult time and it's totally understandable to use it as an escape mechanism to avoid thinking about it or just being conscious in general. I'm glad you recognize that it's sustainability isn't that great and making progress on it!
@sunnyWriting4806 Thank you so much! ❤️
@sunnyWriting4806 I had a vitamin D deficiency and it caused havoc on my mental health where I had depressive episodes during which I overslept and barely ate or left my bed. So I do think mental health issues tend to make you oversleep.
