Healthline: Argue a Lot with Your Partner? Here’s How That Affects Your Health

“A new study published this month in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology reports that the ways that couples communicate with each other — for example, if marital partners tend to give each other the cold shoulder or avoid talking about their problems — can lead to negative emotions and stressful feelings which then impact immune system function. Dysfunctional communication patterns also foster ongoing bad feelings about the relationship itself as well as create chronic inflammation, according to the authors. In fact, the study participants showed up to the lab with elevated inflammation markers already in their blood.

The analysis takes a fresh look at data from a previous 2005 study. In this study, the stress felt by married couples after an argument was found to slow wound healing, delaying it by a day or more.

The authors note that marriage is known to have protective effects on health, with married couples having lower rates of death and illness. However, this study demonstrates that this is not automatically the case. A stressful marriage can have negative effects on health, too.”

My Takeaways:

  • Arguing with your partner or significant other can have reaching impacts into different aspects of your health including your mental and physical health. Negative and stressful emotions can impact immune system function and cause situations of chronic inflammation.

  • Sometimes even passive aggressiveness and giving your partner a cold shoulder can contribute to these chronically stressed states. While not outright cathartic, these states can lead to adverse physical/mental health.

  • Our physical health can resemble our relationships. The healthier our relationships the better we support our physical health as well!
