“Depressive symptoms among adolescents increased by about 6 percent during the pandemic, according to new research from the United Kingdom.

The study, published in Royal Society Open Science Wednesday, also found that life satisfaction decreased among adolescents during the pandemic — a trend that was more pronounced in girls compared to boys.

Mental health issues steadily increased before the pandemic, potentially due to increased screen time, bullying, and academic pressure.

These symptoms worsened during the pandemic as schools and offices closed, and people experienced more social isolation, disruptions in their routines, and chronic stress.”

My Takeaways From This Article

  1. According to the article, there was a study in which a survey showed that teens' rate of severe depression skyrocketed over the course of the pandemic. This closely follows the rate of depression and anxiety based disorder trends found in adults as well.

  2. Researchers posit the reasoning that such rates were increasing were due to lack of social interaction, constant screen viewing and disruption to normal routines such as maintaining sleep schedules and eating properly.

  3. As we are now in a time where COVID can be seen as mostly in the past at least in the quarantine and pandemic aspect, we still struggle with the residuals of the pandemic in these types of problems started during it.

@sunnyWriting4806 I think that it was so obvious that everyone, including teens, would experience more depression, anxiety, etc. during the pandemic. We were forced to isolate while we didn't know what was going on. Our world was turned upside down and we had to change everything we knew about normal living. I can completely understand why teens would struggle! They couldn't socialize or go to school and I definitely think adults are more equipped to handle this kind of thing because teens' brains are fully developed. It's really a shame that mental health has taken a nosedive and I think we will be seeing the repercussions for a long time.

It's definitely hard on everyone (not just teens!) especially with the restrictive and 'trapped' settings of the pandemic. Now that everyone's coming back, we're learning so much about the actual effects of the pandemic to people of every age.

@wrenyaa1

I'm sorry to hear that! It must have been really difficult to go through that and still be dealing with the effects.
