How Important Is Alone Time for Mental Health?
Sometimes being alone is confused with being lonely, but having time to yourself every now and then is crucial for mental health and wellbeing. "Our brains need balance. While social interactions are crucial to certain areas of brain activity, time alone is necessary for our brains to unwind and recharge," Dr. Sherrie Bourg Carter explains.
Why Is Alone Time Important
Finding time to be alone can have several key benefits. Some of these include:
Personal exploration
- For personal growth and development, it is essential to have time to yourself. Being alone lets you focus on yourself, instead of worrying about other people's needs, interests, and opinions.
Creativity
- According to research, being alone can affect the brain in ways that enhance creativity. A study found that people who tend to deliberately withdraw in order to spend time alone also tend to be highly creative.
Social energy
- One in seven Americans lives alone, according to sociologist Eric Klineberg in his book "Going Solo." However, these adults do not feel lonely and many have richer social lives as a result.
How to Spend Time Alone
If you are planning on spending some time by yourself, it is important to do so in a way that is beneficial to your mental health. Being alone is most beneficial when it is voluntary. It's also crucial that you feel like you can return to your social world whenever you like.
- Pick a time: Figure out when you’d like to spend some time alone.
- Turn off social media to eliminate distractions
- Plan something as some relaxation time, exploring a favorite hobby, or reading a book.
- Take a walk
Every person needs a different amount of solo time. Think about things you would like to do by yourself, then practice doing them alone.
If the idea of spending time alone makes you uncomfortable or bored, consider starting with a small amount of alone time that allows you to focus on a specific task. By learning to enjoy your own company, you may find you feel refreshed and inspired when you return to your social circle.

@globalBraid3744 I agree with this article that I need alone time when I become irritable and overwhelmed. I think being around people for me is great most of the time, but sometimes people just overwhelm me and I know it's time to take a step back. When I'm alone, I like to watch TikTok, play Animal Crossing, or sleep. Although it's probably not the best coping skill, I've found sleep to be the one that works the best for me.

I can relate! Sometimes I start to feel anxious when I am socializing too often and I also become overwhelmed when I do not step back. I think it is great you found what works for you! Sleep is still very important as sleeping helps the brain to process emotional information.
@globalBraid3744 Oh yes! Sleeping almost feels like it allows our brain to "refresh." Without it, we wouldn't be able to function on a day-to-day basis.

As someone in uni and finishing up the last semester, there's almost this social antagonism of alone time. Going to the movies or museum for yourself is looked down upon and it's almost like you have to do everything with someone else. But I think there's so much value in alone time especially spending time to go out and have some personal time. Look at things that inspire you and such. This article is amazing and I'm glad you shared it with us.
