How Overthinking Has Impacted My Life

"Overthinking is something that I have struggled with for my entire life. It started off at such a young age, where I didn't think much of anything. I thought that I was just stressed, overstimulated or bored. Now that I am older, I know that it's overthinking. With that being said, overthinking is something that everyone does deal with, but for me I have noticed that it has taken control of my life. From the day-to-day tasks, social interactions, casual conversations or most commonly when I am alone with my thoughts. When I am alone, I get struck with a wave of overthinking from what I am doing wrong with my life, how I look, comparing myself to others and just beating myself down.
I saw a quote that said, 'it's hard to describe what you are thinking inside of your head when you struggle to even understand it yourself'. This quote hit me in a way that I cannot even begin to describe to my closest friends or family. I am often burdened with the negative side effects of mental illness and overthinking. Everything that I have ever done wrong in my life replays on a movie theater screen inside my head 24/7. It is on a continuous loop with no signs of slowing down or stopping. Let me tell you guys, that can get mentally and emotionally draining. Some of the struggles that I have had due to my overthinking entails; never being confident with my decisions, never feeling like I fit in, social anxiety, insomnia, never having enough energy to get through the day, and feeling like I am not worth the love I know I deserve.
Overthinking is often used in a casual sense, but there is nothing casual about it. Some examples of overthinking thoughts; why did I say that, did I leave the curling iron on, should I go, should I stay, did I say the right thing there, should I go talk to that person, was that a stupid comment, you're not enough, you talk too much, you do not talk enough. The list goes on and on, but to sum overthinking up in a sentence, it's a curse. I truly believe that nobody understands the mind of an over thinker until you are one.
With that being said, there are some ways that I have learned to curve my bad habit. When I am getting to the point of overthinking, then I like to take some time to go somewhere alone and talk myself down. I take deep breaths and just talk out what I am feeling by myself. Remember that your thoughts cannot do any damage, and you have the power in that situation. You have the power to stop overthinking, to relax your mind, body and soul. My biggest advice is to give yourself some grace, but also remember you have the power to switch the off button. You have the power to do anything you set your mind to and make the situation better. Even if your mind is telling you that you can't, I promise you can. It will take a lot of time and effort, but putting time into yourself to get peace of mind is worth the work."
*Hello, fellow overthinkers! How are you all doing? I wanted to share this article because I know so many of us struggle with anxiety and intrusive thoughts and I want you all to know that you are not alone in the slightest. Overthinking can be a real monster, but it's important to remember that thoughts are just thoughts. They don't have any power over you. You are in control and you will get through the tough times because you are strong. It is important to take a walk and do something active to break that cycle of thoughts. It's not good to sit in bed and let the thoughts continue to cycle, even though that's what we all think we want to do. I know you all can work through this with time and dedication. Everything will be okay! How do you manage your intrusive thoughts and overthinking?*

I appreciate you creating this post.
This description of overthrowing is what my head feels like all the time. I have even wondered if everyone else actually has moments of quiet peace in their heads for a moment. Because I don't.
I was never aware how draining this is on me until I started to acknowledge my anxiety. Then I noticed I ruminate non stop. And during a panic, my ruminating skyrockets. So far.... I am not very far in coming up with a method to stop my overthinking. All I have is simply make it a point to turn my mind blank. And if that doesn't work. I start humming a song. Any simple song. That way I refocus my mind and stop the thoughts.
This becomes harder to do when I'm driving or trying to do something that allows me time for my mind to wonder. I hate it .
If anyone has any other ways they can shut down or pause their thoughts for a moment, I would love to hear about it.
My overthrowing has greatly had a negative impact in my relationships/life.
I just don't want to be tired anymore
@Luna268 Hi Luna! Thank you for your comment! I totally understand how hard it can be when you feel like your brain never stops and you never have a moment of peace because I understand the feeling too. I try to describe it as like I'm on a hamster wheel that doesn't stop :P What I find is most helpful for me is doing things I enjoy because it distracts my brain for a little while. I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and reading books because it forces my brain to go somewhere else. Have you considered therapy and medication at all? It could be helpful for you to explore! I hope you are able to find something that helps you. We are here for you anytime! 💗

Thank you for your ideas. Reading your comment made me realize I have stopped drawing and reading. I used to read books and draw whenever I felt like it. Now that life is busier, I stopped. I haven't read a full book in 10 years and I haven't drawn anything almost for the same amount of time. Makes me wonder if that is how I used to relax myself and I didn't realize it then.
I am still tired and frustrated at myself. But mostly very embarrassed. I hate reacting to reality due to my overthinking. I kind of made a scene 2 weeks ago and I am still dealing with how I hurt people I love because of it. Just thinking how I must have looked makes me so embarrassed.
THANK YOU for taking a moment of your life to reply to me. 💙
@Luna268 Wow! That's a long time that you stopped doing the things you enjoy, but I understand how busy life gets! Could you maybe try to make it a goal for yourself to do it a few times a week and see if you find yourself relaxing and enjoying it again?
I totally get being frustrated at yourself. We all make a scene sometimes and treat our loved ones not the best sometimes, but it's okay. We all do it and those who say they don't are liars 😂 Your family and friends should forgive you because that's what loved ones do! Everything will be okay! I'm proud of you! 😍

Thank you. Your words help a lot. 💙
I actually started yesterday. I am taking with me a small sketchbook and a book for my long commute to work. I take the subway, so it helps.
It's funny, today I gave drawing a try during my morning commute and I felt so much more productive at work.
I still have to see how my personal life goes. Wish me luck.
Many blessings. Appreciate the feedback 😊
