How to Be Happy at Work

Know what "a good life" means to you.
Research shows three types of people – those who prioritize happiness, those who prioritize meaning, and those who enjoy richness.
- Someone who seeks happiness may prioritize a low-stress job. Whether they like their workmates and have fun at work is likely to be a high priority.
- Someone who prioritizes meaning is concerned with the greater good and/or having experiences that feel personally meaningful to them. They want the work they do to reflect their values closely.
- Someone who values richness like a variety of experiences and novelty. They like complex problem-solving and learning new skills. They enjoy finding creative solutions to problems more than standard ones. They don't like too much sameness or consistency.
Put these concepts in rank order of importance to you. This will help you understand what work will make you most happy.
Job Craft Your Way
Job crafting refers to, over time, making your work a better fit for you – whether in terms of your personality, your strengths, or your preferences (e.g., if you prefer to work from home).
Reject Hustle Culture
When you see your job as a craft, it makes you interested in learning new skills, getting feedback to improve, and interacting with a wide range of people who can help you improve your craft. This way it can build your resilience.

I think as someone who enjoys the ups and downs of a challenge, I really like meaning and richness in a career. Of course there are days when I love the easiness/happiness of jobs such as a mellow day.
The career I'm striving for is a physician, which I think perfectly matches the meaning and richness aspect of what I want. I want to be involved in doing the greater good for a community and additionally I want to be exposed to new experiences and people to be able to challenge my perspectives. Great article!
