“We virtually over-socialize and work longer hours now that we never leave our at-home offices. Personally, I’m a bit tired of hearing people humblebrag about how busy they are and how little sleep they get, as if this were a good or noble thing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a third of adults don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. While in some cases, this is due to insomnia or other sleep disorders, most people don’t get enough sleep because they’re stretching their waking 2hours from early in the morning to late at night, often with the belief that they’re invincible.

There is overwhelming medical evidence, though, that good sleep is critical for good health, and that the opposite can lead to health conditions like diabetes and obesity.

The thing is, sleeping well has never been more important than it is right now.

“At the moment, with everything that we’re going through… we need to be prioritizing our sleep,” she says..”

My Takeaways From This Article

  1. Often a standard of society is based upon how busy they are and how much they’re handling in one day without any sleep. Steve Harvey infamously said in his talk show that sleep is a waste of a third of your life that you could be doing something else. However, an overwhelming amount of anecdotes and research implies the opposite.

  2. Sure we can stretch the hour and not go to sleep to do some work. It may even be quality work at that. However, you wake up with one less hour of sleep, and it may not hit on the first day, but it eventually will add up on the next. That one hour less of sleep can eventually lead to decreased productivity, negative emotions and chronic tiredness. That’s how important sleep is.

  3. I think now, it’s more that we should brag about getting a good night’s sleep. Having a good and consistent sleep schedule is something to be proud about! Not something to shy away from. The ideals of productivity and business are great, but I much rather be well-rested and give my 100% than be tired and give 50% doing the work in a much longer time.

Is your sleep schedule something you’re proud about? How does having a good night’s sleep and working compare to working after getting inadequate sleep?

@sunnyWriting4806 I definitely am not proud of my sleep schedule. Some nights are better than others, but I can definitely work on it. I think it's so much better to sleep and get a good night's rest and then go to work. You can't work at your best until you have a good night's rest!

Sleep schedule building and maintaining is an art and skill in itself! There are so many strategies and ways that works for some people and not so well for others! It's really a long and complicated process so don't worry if you can't get it in the first go! Also I agree with you, working when sleepy has to be one of the worst ways in terms of keeping efficiency and focus up.

@sunnyWriting4806 Thank you for this encouragement! It can be so frustrating when we can't fall asleep at night, but there's always tomorrow to work on it! :D
