Never Washed Your Pillows Before? Here’s Why You Might Want To Start
“You spend roughly 8 hours in bed each night — about a third of your life. That means you’re also spending about a third of your life with your head on a pillow. And in all that time, pillows tend to accumulate: dust and dust mites, fungi, sweat and drool and natural oils from your body.
These various materials can build up in your pillows. According to 2018 research, they can lead to respiratory irritation or allergic reactions, especially when you’re already prone to allergies.
Washing your pillow regularly can help you cut down on potential irritants. And on top of that, you might rest easier knowing your pillow isn’t hosting a combo of dirt, dust, and mites. As a general rule, you’ll probably want to wash your pillow a few times each year, at least. Depending on the type of pillow, some different guidelines exist.
Pillows made from many synthetic materials accumulate dust faster. But since they’re more washer-friendly, you can wash them more often.
Other pillows, like gel or memory foam options, may need less frequent washing or spot cleaning only.
No matter what kind of pillow you have, most experts agree you’ll need to replace it at some point.”
My Takeaways From This Article
A little reminder to wash something that perhaps we may not be thinking needs washing: our pillows! As the article says, our pillows accumulate so much dirt and grime that accumulates when we sleep on it through the night. Sure washing our pillowcases can give us a temporary clean feel, but our pillows still host many nasty things if it stays unwashed for a long time.
Our pillows can hold a lot of stuff that can cause irritation to our respiration during night, aggravation of allergies and also for some of us acne and skin related problems. All that dirt from your face and hair will eventually be exposed to your face during sleep.
The article recommends that we wash it at least a couple times per year, with some pillow material being a lot better than others. However it’s recommended that eventually we replace our pillow for another one to prevent over accumulation of things.

This is a very interesting article, thank you for sharing! I do wash my pillows, however, I have read that it is good to wash them once a month, especially for people with skin that is prone to acne as mine. I do not wash it that often.
