In simple terms, transcendental meditation involves using meditation and mantra to remain conscious while settling the mind. It can result in deep relaxation and calm.

Tony Nader is a Harvard-trained medical doctor who received his PhD in neuroscience from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He’s also the leader of transcendental meditation (TM).

“But this is what transcendence means,” Nader says. “It means going beyond all activity of the mind and diving into a state of oneness. That state of unity between mind and body is extremely calming.”

Transcendental meditation benefits include:

  • mental clarity
  • stress reduction
  • relaxation
  • perspective
  • increased problem-solving ability
    • a greater spiritual connection to self

  • In recent years, scientists have focused on the potential for TM to lower blood pressure and protect against heart disease.
  • Stress reduction is a hallmark benefit of meditation, and TM is no exception.
  • A 2021 reviewTrusted Source of the impact of meditation on veterans with PTSD reported that all interventions showed improvements in symptoms of PTSD.
  • A 2018 studyTrusted Source of adults who were inexperienced in meditation indicated that regular practice of TM could reduce alcohol cravings and use.
  • Individuals who practice TM report feeling increased connection, more empathy, and compassion toward themselves and others.

A person should learn how to do transcendental meditation from a certified teacher. Students can still receive follow-up instructions on how to practice transcendental meditation at TM centers around the country.

Thanks for sharing this article! I really wish I could have the patience for meditation. I think my mind just runs so fast all the time that I don't have the determination to sit down and just relax. I'm better at coping by distracting myself with other things to do and occupy my mind. Regardless, I can see how this may be beneficial for others!! Relaxing our mind can do wonders for our body because the two are so interconnected! ❤️

@fruityPond7887 Well-said. I used to find it difficult to stay focused during meditation as well but I eventually got the hang of it and due to that, my ability to focus on things has improved immensely. I really recommend meditation and don't worry if you aren't able to the first few times, just keep going!

I’ll have to give it a try! Do you use an app or anything?

Thanks for sharing this new and interesting article! I think personally my before-bed thought sessions and meditation really helps me clear out my mind from the day and reflect on it. I think it's a great way to maintain emotional stability and keep our mental states healthy!

@sunnyWriting4806 I agree! The times I meditate are before bed and when I wake up. I find it helps you sleep and clears you mind for the new day ahead!
