Self-Harm Recovery Check-In: Tuesday, December 31st, 2019

December 31st, 2019

Dear lovely SHR Community

In a few hours, a new year will begin. Today, I would like to invite us all to give ourselves the little pat on the back we all deserve for the steps we have taken so far on our path towards recovery. I am proud of each of you, and grateful to know you. You are a true inspiration for me.

Check-in questions:

How are you feeling?

Can you think of a word that starts with the first letter of your name, something that you want to carry into 2020?

With love from France,

Valeria

@admaiorasemper

I'm feeling pretty good today. Just had my first meeting with someone who gonna guide me in the process of living on my own. They were really nice and we seemed pretty much on the same wave length.

During the meeting I saw I got a message from the guy I like, so that was a bit distracting. Also nervous about it, cause I don't know what to say.

My name starts with an R, I'm gonna go with "reach out". I wanna reach out to the people around me more this coming year, connect with them more. And also build up some new relationships.

Hey Richard, good morning. It is nice to have you here :)

I am happy to read that you are feeling pretty good and that the meeting you had earlier this morning went ok. The new year will bring you such an amazing adventure, that of living on your own! I am also happy to hear about that little moment of distraction. I get how that message would also make you nervous, but I believe every challenge - either big or small - make us grow one way or another.

I really really like your choice of "reach out"! It is such an important thing to be able to connect to people around us, to let our guard down, to trust them, to be our true self...

I wish you a nice start into the new year!

It makes me sad to look back on the resolutions I broke. But I know I've grown a lot too. I told myself I wouldnt self harm this year, but I did, a lot more than in years past. But I know how to deal with it better now. This year has been hard but all the other hard years have taught me how to deal with it. Sorry for rambling. The word I would use is gentle. I need to be gentle on myself and others while I'm going through this period of growth.

Hi there @fairmindedRaspberries1389, thank you for joining in and sharing your thoughts with us! No need to apologise for anything, these check-ins are meant exactly for us to ramble and express ourselves :)

It is very positive that despite the sadness you feel at having broken your past resolutions, you can also see how far you have come and how much you have grown.

I personally find New Year's resolutions a bit dangerous: we may set ourselves up for failure if our resolutions are unrealistic... Just focusing on the whole next year may feel overwhelming... I find setting weekly goals far more manageable and it also helps ato deal with slips. Which will eventually happen: we are human and imperfect after all :) Do you think this kind of approach may feel useful for you too?

I really like the word "gentle": being kind and compassionate towards both ourselves and others leads to a much more fullfilled life.

I wish you a lovely start into 2020!

I thought about what I want most out of 2020, and although there's a ton to work on which include being more organized, having a healthy routine, learning to accept every flaw ... there's one thing that I want to focus on that I neglected last year, and has been missing from my life for awhile. That is motivation. And coincidentally my name does start with M.

I'm not sure how to be genuinely motivated. I quit 3 different jobs this year. Everything seems so hard. And it's just easier to take the day off and lay in bed.

I relax too much. How can I be more eager to looking forward to the day? When all it is is painful repetition.

Hi there @Skyy0, thank you for checking-in and sharing your thoughts and feelings with us <3

Motivation - that is a really nice and important word you have chosen! Sustaining motivation can be really tough even we are feeling our best... There is no magic recipe for it, and it requires constant work. And I really get what you say about how easier it is to just take the day off and lay in bed. I personally think we all need that from time to time, and that it is very important to recognise when we feel like that and honour that feeling. It is also very important to keep in mind that we deserve to live fully, and that is where motivation plays a role.

To keep myself motivated I find helpful to break down my goals into smaller ones. Not long ago I also read this wikihow page and I thought there were good ideas there too. Maybe you will also find them useful :)

I wish you a lovely start into 2020 :)
