Self-Harm Recovery Daily Check-In: Saturday May 16, 2020
Hey everyone and happy Saturday! I hope everyone had a great week. Personally, this week has had some ups and downs but we're getting through it all right! :)
I wanted to talk a little bit about hope today! (Not the listeners.. lol)

I have a lot to say about hope! I think it's one of my "listener rants" that I go on a lot on social media and also to my friends because of how important it is. I think in any recovery journey, hope is essential. Often times, my main goal is to leave members with a little bit of hope that things will be okay. Hope is what gives us this motivation to keep going and gives us the slightest bit of light in the darkest of times.

Check-in questions
1) How are you doing right now? Feel free to share things about your week if you would like (good or bad, up to you) :)
2) What are some examples of remaining hopeful to you? Have you, yourself, had to remain hopeful in really tough situations? Feel free to share your stories with hope. :)
3) Are you a morning or night person? Or both (like me)?
4) What are your thoughts on cheese?
Take care everyone and have a great weekend! :)
1) How are you doing right now? Feel free to share things about your week if you would like (good or bad, up to you) :)
Hello there! I haven't been on 7 cups in a while, it's nice to be back. I just finished talking with a listener and I feel a lot better
. This week has been rough. But I feel pretty good right now. I just figured out, and I can not believe I didn't see this before, I have a fear of diseases. What an ironic time to figure that out?
2) What are some examples of remaining hopeful to you? Have you, yourself, had to remain hopeful in really tough situations? Feel free to share your stories with hope. :)
I was going through a rough patch a few years ago, that's when I started self-harming. I was lonely and sad, and I didn't know how to cope with my feelings. Though there were many days when I didn't feel like getting out of bed, I remained hopeful that I would get through this. I remained hopeful that I would gain strength and resilience, and healthy coping mechanisms. And you know what? I found friends who truly care about me. I developed healthy ways to cope with sadness. Remaining hopeful about the future got me through my toughest times.
3) Are you a morning or night person? Or both (like me)?
I think it depends. If I have something to look forward to in the morning I'll be a morning person, but I also really like the night.
4) What are your thoughts on cheese?
I LOVE cheese. But eating too much makes my stomach feel like it's on fire :)
@fairmindedRaspberries1389
Hi there! Glad to have you back with us and I'm so glad you got to have a good and helpful chat with a listener! Although I'm super glad you're feeling good right now, I'm sorry to hear that you've had a rough week. :( We actually both went through similar self-harm journeys and I'm so glad that we're both at a more content stage now in life. I felt lonely and didn't know how to cope as well, but I'm so proud both of us have instilled hope in life and ourselves. Hope has helped me a lot throughout the majority of my self-harm recovery journey which is why I wanted to talk about it here <3 Same! I always need things to look forward to in the mornings :P Dairy makes my stomach mad too and the industry makes me mad as well so I feel ya.. although cheese is honestly pretty rad. Thanks for checking in! <3
1) How are you doing right now? Feel free to share things about your week if you would like (good or bad, up to you) :)
I'm fluxuating. I haven't been overwhelmingly bad or good. Right now not so good. I'm stressed.
2) What are some examples of remaining hopeful to you? Have you, yourself, had to remain hopeful in really tough situations? Feel free to share your stories with hope. :)
I feel like I have as I keep trying to work towards what I want even though a good part of me feels like I'm doing this in vain.
3) Are you a morning or night person? Or both (like me)?
Either really early in the morning or really late at night. Don't like afternoons.
4) What are your thoughts on cheese?
I love cheese! so much good cheese out there and I haven't even tried it all.
@greenteahelps
I feel that, my mood has fluxuated a lot recently but I'm glad you're not on the polarized ends of it. Sorry to hear that you're feeling really stressed at the moment *gives hugs* feel free to reply with what's going on if you need to vent. That's a good description of hope! I love how you persevere and that's a really good quality trait <3 I don't like afternoons either! They make me sleepy (which is ironic because I start getting hyper in the early morning or late nights) and I end up having to drink an iced latte or something to keep myself awake in the afternoons hehe. I haven't tried a lot of cheese either :P have a good week and thank you for checking in <3

1) How are you doing right now? Feel free to share things about your week if you would like (good or bad, up to you) :)
Just fine. Nothing good but o well.
2) What are some examples of remaining hopeful to you? Have you, yourself, had to remain hopeful in really tough situations? Feel free to share your stories with hope. :)
I have in the past. Hoping life won't be as bad that it will all pass soon. Hopping god will show justice then hoppping I would get it myself then hopping to move past all such ideas and things.
3) Are you a morning or night person? Or both (like me)?
Both. I don't like slowing down. I like the peace of being alone in the morning. Knowing others are asleep and away. I like the night for the same reasons. You can get so much done without others gumming things up or distracting.
4) What are your thoughts on cheese?
It is like most other things in life. It has its purpose. Outside of that it is a distraction. And like most anything else if you stick your pinky out and talk for a bit, don't brake face. It will be seen as a thing of culture and some how better because of it. People do it with all kinds of things like cars, wine, dogs, watches, boats, countrys, books, and other people.
@Flornhope
Hi Florn! Although I'm glad you're "fine" , I hope you can get above that this week! <3 Those are a lot of good examples of hope :) proud of you for hoping for the best for yourself. It's arguably a hard thing to do and I'm glad you're doing it. I feel exactly the same way about mornings and nights. Although I am VERY extroverted, we all need some peace and alone time! Interesting perspective on cheese, I respect it.
@TheAtticusFinch I guess I wasn't very clear. Most of my hopes are past tense. I don't want revenge. I don't pray to god to have anybody punished. But I'm working on wanting well anything for myself in the future. I guess I kinda rented on about the cheese and stuff. I don't want to cause any offense to anybody.
1) I'm alright. Had another heart-to-heart with myself. Realized I have to truly cut all ties with everything, not invest emotions in anything too much in order to live the peaceful life I want. The life I want involves emotion in the moment but that's it, just allowing that moment to be that moment. And this will help with traumatic memories and having to be around my abusers now, too. I can walk past them and not worry about what's going to happen to me because their actions are always going to be their problem, the result of their insecurities, not mine.
2) It's interesting how people view things differently. I kinda disagree about hope. I've seen hope build unrealistic expectations in people, myself included, that leads to disappointment when that hope isn't met. Or worse, disillusionment, feeling lost, distrust, self-hate, etc. I prefer to stay neutral about things as of today, to not expect anything or attach hope to anything because then I'm attached to the outcome. I prefer to not be attached to the outcome, to know that both positive and negative outcomes are possible and to be prepared for either while not leaning towards one. "Hope" this is okay to share
3) Night person, though occassionally I shift to morning. In high school I used to wake up at 3:45 am just to have some time to myself before I had to be around others. Nowadays I'm a late sleeper.
4) 99 % of the time I love it, have since I was a kid and no one can convince me that it's gross. I sometimes go through phases where I don't want anything to do with cheese or think someone put too much cheese on something, but I can be picky.
Thanks for the check-in
@Lexloveslife
I think what you want to do may be beneficial for the moment and I understand how you would see it that way. Having heart-to-heart conversations to yourself like that can be really challenging but you seem to have a confident solution to what you're going through <3 I hope you get to rebuild some healthy ties soon though, those can be beneficial sometimes as well. I respect your view of hope, but I think hope can be a dichotomy at times. You can be hopeless and feel almost nihilistic at times or feel like what you describe (too hopeful), I hope we can both find the balance of it all. 3:45 AM is very early and late! We both are picky with food and have our ons and offs with cheese. :P Thank you for checking in and sharing! *hugs*
@TheAtticusFinch
I have definitely been hopeless before, too! I think balance is what I aim for with neutrality. It's just my version of it by not having hope whatsoever and not having that be automatically negative (e.i. hopelessness) just neutral & realistic :) thank you for respecting my view. can I ask what you mean by the balance? What does that look like for you, I mean? Maybe we're on the same page but saying it differently...
@Lexloveslife
I think your "neutrality" is equated to my "balance"! I'm gad we're on the same page here. I would say that balance in anything looks different for different people. Therapy has taught me to avoid dichotomous situations and to look for that balance. For me in terms of hope, balance is being a healthy hopeful of looking forward to things but not having unhealthy expectations. :) For example, I'm apply hope to when I'm applying for some internship. I could be super positive about the situation and be hoping to get in and to get all the benefits of working there, but I know that I might not get in and I'd be okay with it. Yet, I'm not being nihilistic and feeling as if I'll never get in. Hopefully that makes sense. :) Thank you for responding to my view as well!
@TheAtticusFinch
Yes, that makes perfect sense
