Self-Harm Recovery Daily Check in: May 2nd, 2020
Good morning and hello SHR sub-community! I hope everyone is having a great Saturday and ready for the weekend.
Today, I would like to talk about alternatives to unhealthy coping mechanisms (such as self-harm). It's important to know where the urge for self-harming comes from. Whether it's the need to feel physical pain instead of mental pain or to take out anger on something, it's always easier to know how to solve a problem if you know where it's coming from. Overall, statistics and surveys have shown that most people self-harm to express extreme emotions, to calm themselves, to attempt to stop feeling numb and to release tension/pent up anger.

Here are some alternative coping mechanisms for these feelings:
If you self-harm to express pain and intense emotions, you could:
Paint, draw, or scribble on a big piece of paper with red ink or paint
Start a journal in which to express your feelings
Compose a poem or song to say what you feel
Write down any negative feelings and then rip the paper up
Listen to music that expresses what youre feeling
If you self-harm to calm and soothe yourself, you could:
Take a bath or hot shower
Pet or cuddle with a dog or cat
Wrap yourself in a warm blanket
Massage your neck, hands, and feet
Listen to calming music
If you self-harm because you feel disconnected or numb, you could:
Call a friend (you dont have to talk about self-harm)
Take a cold shower
Hold an ice cube in the crook of your arm or leg
Chew something with a very strong taste, like chili peppers, peppermint, or a grapefruit peel
Go online to a self-help website, chat room, or message board
If you self-harm to release tension or vent anger, you could:
Exercise vigorously—run, dance, jump rope, or hit a punching bag
Punch a cushion or mattress or scream into your pillow
Squeeze a stress ball or squish Play-Doh or clay
Rip something up (sheets of paper, a magazine)
Make some noise (play an instrument, bang on pots and pans)

Thanks for sharing that list! Always a good reminder that there are plenty of alternatives to try out <3
One thing that is going well for me today is uhhh I managed to get my work out and my Spanish lesson done to continue my strike
One thing that isn
@LinearWaves
Aw man, I'm really sorry to hear that you're going through difficulties with mom. I know personally how challenging that can be and how frustrating it can be and you're right that although things might be good for now, it's extremely emotionally tiring. I hope you're coping well with that one and I know how patient and kind you are so I know and hope you'll be okay. Blackberry muffins sounds delicious right now! I know a ton of people have started to take up baking since lockdown started but I haven't gotten the time to do it myself xD and yes exercise/sports are great coping mechanisms and are often really good to use to get rid of strong emotions. Take care linear and you enjoy your weekend too <3
@TheAtticusFinch
Thanks a lot for the support and kind words!
The muffins were perfect haha, take care!

What's one thing that is going well for you today?
I have been outside today, even though it was rather cloudy. But I went for a little walk and I did grocery shopping, not up for riding my bike as it would be a longer trip, and I wasn't sure if it would rain or something - and I don't like being wet
What's one thing that isn't going well for you today?
I have eaten everything in sight today. I know I shouldn't and when I counted the calories it wasn't as bad as I thought, but Imma do better tomorrow. My family will be there, and I won't be able to just eat randomly. But I should buy some fruit, so I can snack on that instead. I snacked pretty healthy today, as I didn't have a lot to snack on or eat at all, and I guess that's why I didn't truely binge. I didn't eat big amounts of unhealthy food, bc I didn't have it in the house. Guess it's easy as that?
What's your favorite coping mechanism when you feel in extreme emotions or numbness?
I want to say SH, but I guess that isn't a good answer. So Imma say working out in any way: bikerides, walks, weightlifting, yoga whatever. As long as it's hard and I can make it hurt, it's good
What's your favorite dessert?
I'm not one with a sweet tooth, but I really do like strawberry ice cream.
@EvilRegalsReadToo
I'm glad you got to go outside and get some fresh air today, regals! Fresh air and just being able to be outside these days is almost a luxury and I know you deserve that. I don't like being wet in the rain either; makes me shiver lol. I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with your eating and I can hear how challenging that is for you right now. I hope that this week is easier for you in terms of that and that you get to get some fruit. I like to put away all the unhealthy snacks at my house as far away as possible so that I don't snack on them :) And yes, SH is a definite no for healthy coping mechanisms but I think you have a point in that as long as it hurts and is hard (safely), it can be considered a good coping mechanism and I'm glad you have those. Take care and have a good weekend <3
Hi! I'm new at 7 cups. And thanks for sharing the information.
I used to do A LOT of excersise to calm down and since I can't anymore I had a really bad time. But now I see that it helped me find other things that also help which is great. I still miss Very much doing excersise, but I have been painting which is very helpful! As for the questions
A thing that is going good. Is that I finished a painting and It came out good
A thing that isn't going good is that I procrastinated a lot today so I feel like I wasted my time.
I love to dance that is my favorite way to manage feelings
And I love deserts with ice-cream or chocolate mousse
I hope I did this right... ✌🏻
@modestVase1408
Hi Vase! You're awesome and you definitely posted this correctly :) Welcome to 7 cups!! :) Exercise is a great coping mechanism so I'm so sorry to hear that you can't anymore :( I've personally been using youtube videos to continue exercising from home which has been helpful for me <3 Painting and art in general is very rad and I'm glad you finished a painting. Procrastination is the devil and I hope tomorrow is easier for you so that you can get more done and dancing seems fun! Take care <3
