Self-Harm Recovery Daily Check-in: Sunday August 9th, 2020.

I have some good news to share with you : I've become forum supporter on the SHR team. I wanted to join the team so I could help out with the daily check-ins and meet up with you guys regularly ! :) I'm still new to this, so please be patient with me, I'm learning :)
Some quick info about me : I have an neverending love for anything that can help us express ourselves in a artistic or creative way. Music is my best friend and I tend to use imagery a lot when trying to explain myself. Therefore I'll probably slip in some music recommendations, artsy pictures, poetry, quotes, etc. Please feel free to share anything you think relevant to the topic of the check-in, I love to learn about new stuff.
For my first check-in, I'd like to talk about how we can view support systems throughout our recovery. Personally I like to use the imagery of a lighthouse. I often view recovery as a ship sailing on the seas. Sometimes the sea is calm, sun shining and the breeze slowing taking us to our destination. Othertimes, the sea is rough. The wind blowing in our sails is pushing us off course. Storms rage across the oceans. And for those difficult times, when we seem to be franctically ajusting the sails and holding on to the helm, I find comfort in the fact that somewhere on the shore there'll be a lighthouse waiting for me. No matter what, there'll be that light shining and guiding us home. And sure sometimes, we won't be able to see it, maybe the light will be blocked by the storm clouds but that doesn't change the fact that it's still there. In a way that lighthouse is a support system. It might slip out of view or somedays we'll just be looking the other way and not notice it but there's a safe place somewhere on this planet.

Im doing okay today, slightly worried about whether my cells have survived the weekend, theyre the material for my experiments but lately theyve all been dying: one stock got a virus, another stock just didnt survive the freezing/unfreezing, so Im hoping this stock will work so I can finally start my experiments again!
2) How do you view your support system ?
Now thats a tough one, my support system has never been too great but lately its been worse, thankfully I havent really been needing a support system recently, but yeah for now my support system is a mirror I guess, just me and my coping skills (and my ice cream)

Its funny Ive always had a thing for lighthouses! These pics with a huge lighthouse almost in the middle of nowhere with waves crashing on it, yet still standing strong and doing its job, thats quite impressive! Id say though that mine isnt shining all the time, maybe some kind of energy saving lighthouse? :p It would be at the top of a hill though, to avoid the crashing waves, a bit deserted with a strong door that might be hard to open, but worth the view when youre on top of it!

I'm sorry to hear about your support system, sometimes we're just not lucky enough to find the right people at the right time. Though I'm happy to hear that you have your coping skills to help you along the way :) (ice cream is a very good companion too, and very appropriate at the moment !)
Oh an energy saving one, that's smart ! So you're sure to have light when you need it :) I'm sure it's beautiful up there on it's hill. Hopefully one day the door will be easier to open ? So that you can enjoy the view with someone else :)

Thanks! It will be Monday's surprise! Yeah I sometimes realise that, but I haven't even started talking about my dogs' samples! Which sounds even worse hahah (no dog harmed though!)
Thankfully I had support when I needed it most! But I hope indeed that if it's ever needed, the light up the lighthouse is going to shine again!

In a way, I hope that your lighthouse doesn't light up, that would mean that all is well :)
Oh my lighthouse ? It's an old one, not because of people supporting me on the long term but because I choose to carry their support for a while. Any emotion given to me is safely kept there. The walls are thick, made of grey stone that has been worn by the waves constantly crashing against it. If you run your hands over them, they'll be smooth. My lighthouse doesn't light up very often, though it stands strong right next to the sea. It's suffered over time and some parts need to be repaired but it's still there, tall and proud. The foundations are strong thanks to family love but apart from them, people only visit for a while. Ivy has grown all over the walls, covering up so much of the surface that from far away you could mistake it for a tree. When you go in, there's something eery about the place, there are memories living there, maybe some are trapped maybe some don't want to leave. It's a place full of emotions and if the walls could talk, they would have quite a few stories to tell.

This sounds like a really beautiful and strong lighthouse! I dont know if youve seen the animated movie Inside out, which has pretty much nothing to do with a lighthouse, but your description plus the movie made me kinda think about the fact that maybe past emotions, previous support and memories trapped there can also produce the light coming from the lighthouse.

Awwhhhh I'm doing okay today! A bit nervous to figure out how school is going to go this year. My school has two programs available, the distance learning program and the independent study program and at first I was going to do the independent study program (since my grandparents won't allow me to take the distance learning program in case we have to go back to school), but then I asked if I could first start with distance learning (so that I have some support with school for the first half of the year) and then I could transfer to independent study if school re-opened. Sadly, it led to some complications with family and I might get pulled out of the school district altogether to do online programs.. but it's complicated family stuff and I just hope it works out in my favor 🥺I'm trying to focus on the good stuff now though like the fact that I'm getting into digital art and also some new journalism endeavors!
2) How do you view your support system ?
Ahhhh my support system is everything to me! I used to have a huge support system since I used to have a lot of friends before quarantine started.. but then I lost a lot of friends (which is okay and natural) due to lack of seeing them and just how busy I got. These days I just keep some really close friends close and try to enjoy the company of others while I can. No matter what size and at what time, I appreciate them tons and they're always incredibly supportive of me and my crazy life!!

Ahhh I love this! :o I don't know.. honestly it'd be pretty tall and be pretty cozy! :o It'd shine really bright so that literally everyone can see and it'd be red and black. I'd love for it to be super indie and aesthetic inside and look like a cafe and bookshop as well!

Oh wow, I knew that school was going to be complicated this year for everyone but that does seem to be quite a puzzle you have there. It's incredible how much social distancing has changed our everyday life. I hope everything goes as smoothly as posible for you ! Sending peaceful thoughts your way <3 And digital art, sweet ! What sort of stuff are you doing/planning to do ? Journalism is pretty interesting too :) I'm happy to hear that you're focusing on the good things, very healthy mindset there :)
Aww that's so sweet of you to say. Though I'm sad that you lost some of your friends due to quarantine, but they say that a few good friends are better than lots of fake ones, so I hope you find meaningful relationships in the ones that stayed !
