Helpful hobbies!

Hi everyone and happy Thursday! Since summer is starting and more and more students are being released to summer vacation, I thought about switching up the topic to hobbies! Hobbies are generally just activities that we do for fun in our spare time. Hobbies can be great for distraction and also a really good coping mechanism as well!

Milk & Mocha on Twitter: "Reading time > bonding time 🐻 --- Feel ...

How can hobbies be a good coping mechanism and distraction:

Hobbies often are things we do that relax us! Activities such as art or music are generally activities that are enjoyable to do for that person and can be therapeutic as well. Hobbies are also helpful to relieving stress by keeping us engaged in things we enjoy. In all recovery journeys, especially self-harm recovery, it's important to find things that we enjoy doing and make the time to practice/do them so that we have time that isn't associated with other responsibilities.

Hobbies are also shown to help us become more patient! This is because hobbies often take some time to develop and learn. Learning how to do new things can help us learn how to be more patient which can be helpful with others and ourselves. Patience with ourselves has many other benefits as well too!

As a general distraction from self-harm thoughts or bad things in general are also really important when in more urgent matters. When we have many hobbies that we enjoy doing at hand, it can be helpful to try and engage in these hobbies instead of self-harm or sitting alone with our thoughts.

1) Building houses in Sims games, writing, and drawing too. At age 9, a friend introduced me to Sims. I began admiring architecture & interior design in real life so I decided to try it myself in the game. I had an encouraging English teacher in first grade so writing began there. I remember her name 15 years later, she was that important to me. I appreciate all you teachers out there, you do thankless work. At age 7, a friend said I'd never be able to draw more than stick figures. Thanks to her I'm close to graduating art school. I think the way I got into my hobbies vs. being a one-time thing is the feeling of acomplishment from completing the project, chapter, etc

2) I would like to get back into reading. I fall asleep no matter what book I read, where I sit, how awake I am

3) Hm, probably my laptop only because I use it everyday

Hey Lex! Thanks for replying today. Omg! Your stories behind getting into your hobbies are so cool and so inspiring. I love that so much! A few of my family members used to play Sims and a few close friends of mine also play Sims as well!! And I'm into writing as well thanks to a few of my teachers that have helped me and also just out of a passion for putting feelings to words. :) I love teachers too and I also love and admire how you got into art. How heartless of your ex-friend for saying that but how amazing is it that you're graduating art school soon!! I feel ya.. I fall asleep often when I read and I'm getting back into it too. And yes laptops are essential!

Oh the person who said that about my drawing is still a friend! I don't think she was insulting me, it seemed like a little friendly competition :) We were both sassy. I just happened to take it to heart. Whenever we would doodle as kids, I always drew stick figures and she'd draw flowers or something else

How do you manage to stay awake when you read?

1) What's a hobby that you have/ that you practice! How did you get into it?
I have several hobbies. One is writing novels and stories. I have done that for years, and since I was a little kid I have always told myself stories to feel less alone. And then I began writing them down, and suddenly I was an author (I have published 3 audiobooks by publisher).
Second hobby is roleplaying better know as RPG. It allows me to understand ppl who are not like me, and play as them to experience other lives. I began RPG when I felt alone and I thought I was done with writing novels (which I wasn't).
Third one is rollerblading. I have always liked it and recently I found my old rollerblades in the basement of my parents' home, so I began doing it again. And I love it. It's a great way of exercise along with me going to the gym and doing bikerides.

2) What are some hobbies that you would like to try out this summer?
I would love to see, if I still like drawing. And at some point I want to learn how to longboard. Mostly bc it looks really, really fun!

3) What's the favorite piece of technology you own and why?
Uhm... I can't survive without my phone, for maps and music, but living without my computer wouldn't be an option either :)

Hey Regals! That's so cool that you're an author, I never knew that and I admire that so much! Writing novels and stories sound so magical and so so cool. RPG is something that I'm not as familiar with but I admire how you describe it and I can definitely see why it's appealing and popular in our culture today! You've mentioned rollerblading before and I agree that sounds like so much fun! I'm getting back into drawing (although I can't draw for my life hahaha) and I hope you will too. Thanks for replying and take care :)

1) What's a hobby that you have/ that you practice! How did you get into it?

I really enjoy playing tennis, running, and painting. My family randomly started playing tennis a few years ago, and I really enjoy it. I love to see my progression throughout the years.

2) What are some hobbies that you would like to try out this summer?

I really want to read more and learn how to play an instrument.

3) What's the favorite piece of technology you own and why?

My phone because I can do pretty much everything I need to do on it.
