Coping skills

I have about 5 months without self-harm. I don't consider myself out of the woods because it's been a diehard habit for two decades. I have found some things I use to replace self-harm that have helped me a lot and I thought it may be beneficial to list some. I actually have a list saved in my phone because during urges it is difficult to think clearly. It's a good tool and I would recommend anyone to make their own list as they try different things.

Here is some of my list:

  • Splash my face and hair in very cold water, or take a shower alternating hot and cold water.

  • Rip up paper, crumple it and throw it all over my house (usually by the time I am done picking them up I am calmer)

  • Black out a full sheet of paper with a fine tip pen.

  • Organize or sort things.

  • Watch short videos of your own interests

  • Prayer

  • Scrub hands or feet.

  • Put on body cream or lotion.

I hope this is helpful, even if only to one person. If anyone has their own techniques or activities, please post them on this thread!
