Self-Harm Recovery Tips
How did you overcome your battle with self-harm? Share any helpful tips you have discovered a long your recovery journey! If you still get urges, how do you deal with them?
I went to a retreat last summer and at the retreat people were writing on a board their recovery victories. I wasn't even 10 days free of self-harm at the time and I remember thinking to myself "Next year I want to be able to write '1 year free from self-harm;" so in that moment I made the decision I wasn't going to self-harm anymore. It's been a hard battle and I still get urges but I've stayed strong. When I get urges I use this skill called "urge surfing." I tell myself that if I still feel like self-harming in 5 minutes, or tomorrow, then I can do it then, but when that 5 minutes or that day is over I give myself another 5 minutes or another day, and eventually the urge goes away without me acting on it.
@InvaderStitch yes, riding the wave/urge surfing is what I use as well! It's really helpful, especially to put it into context with another negative emotion such as stress. Stress goes away in time- once it reaches its peak, keep going and don't give up just yet. It'll lower in time... thanks for the post! :) xx
