I really am struggling with alcohol addiction, and it runs heavily in my family. I need help figuring out a way to get around that and NOT drink three times a week, it's not good and it's damaging my relationships with the people around me.

Hi Brean, it sounds that there is a lot going on at the same time. Sometimes trying to slowly drink once a week is a goal. But maybe going down to drinking twice a week might be a good goal right now.

I am in the same boat. Alcoholism runs in my family. My husband and friends get together to socially drink. I am running into an issue to not realizing that certain nights hits me more than others or that I am drinking too fast. I know that my husband is currently not happy with me about the previous weekend. Feel frustrated in myself does help either.

I drank heavily for 35 years. I found it to be a mitigator for social anxiety and sensory issues, which I found came with Aspergers Syndrome that was not diagnosed until late in life. Depression and alcohol use set up a negative loop for me. I drink when I felt bad and I felt bad when I drank. It’s been a lot of daily work, but I have not had a drink in 106 weeks. I did rehabs of 28, 14 and 90 days. The final 90-day rehab was at a place with lots of one-on-one counseling and a psychiatrist on staff — as well as an MD and nurses. I feel really good today. I’m off all medications for mood. I take some supplements under the supervision of my doctor. For months I’d have what I’d call “blue afternoons,” where I’d feel depressed or anxious for a few hours, but I’m finding that the supplements, exercise and a healthy diet are making a difference. I also make getting good sleep a priority.

@Breannak I can relate. I have had struggles with alcohol in the past as well. I found it helped to focus on something I loved more than alcohol. Yoga and meditation helped me process my thoughts and feelings in a healthier way. Have you ever tried gentle yoga or meditation?
