Moving on from your own mistakes before others involved in your mistake have forgiven you

Does anybody else struggle to move on from their mistakes until they think they've discussed every nuance of their own side and are confident everyone involved in an issue has forgiven them?

This is something I desperately need advice for and help with. Also, do other people make mistakes that supposedly common sense should have told them not to make?

Like badmouthing an ex-friend of a friend, calling them a "worse version of myself", and being told that it wasn't just tasteless because it comes of as self deprecation but also because common sense says I shouldn't say anybody is like a worse version of me, or any version of me for that matter.
