About Sheppard Pratt
Founded in 1853, Sheppard Pratt provides specialized treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders, serving young adults, professionals at career transitions, and adults facing significant life changes. Their comprehensive approach includes thorough mental health evaluations and psychiatric consultations for all residents. Treatment incorporates various evidence-based modalities including individual, group, and family therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychopharmacological interventions, and psychodynamic therapy. The program is further enhanced by holistic and experiential components such as rock climbing, yoga, art therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and equine-assisted therapy, with 35 hours of group and family therapy offered weekly. Sheppard Pratt's multidisciplinary team comprises psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, therapists, social workers, and nurses. As a pioneer in innovative treatment, they were among the first facilities to implement transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression and continue to conduct on-site research. Rooted in Quaker heritage, the organization upholds principles of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality. Their historic Towson, Maryland campus, spanning 340 acres, opened in 1891 after 34 years of construction, funded by founder Moses Sheppard's unprecedented $571,441.41 bequest to mental health services.
