Day 12: With Jesus as Peter Denies Him

Take a moment to quiet yourself: close your eyes and take some deep breaths.
Pray this prayer or something similar in your own words: Jesus, help me draw close to you by seeing my suffering in yours and your suffering in mine.
Today's first passage takes us back to Jesus' prediction of Peter's denial. The second describes how it came about: after fleeing Gethsemane, Peter circles back to see what will happen to his Rabbi, hoping to blend in with those sitting around a fire in the high priest's courtyard.
Read slowly through both passages, noticing the details. What does Jesus say to Peter in the Upper Room? How does he respond to knowing this disciple who loves him will deny him? What do you see on his face, and how does his voice sound?
Jesus' suffering seems multiplied here: after watching his disciples flee, and in the middle of questioning, abuse, and mockery, one of his closest friends denies even knowing him. As you read a second time, imagine you are somewhere in the high priest's house. What does Peter's voice sound like as he answers? What might Jesus have been aware of as Peter denies him again and again?
As you close this time of prayer, share with Jesus what this passage has brought up for you.
