It’s okay to feel depressed in your room. This can happen for a few reasons. Sometimes, your room may feel messy or dark, which can result in negative feelings. Sometimes, the memories attached to the furniture or the paint can affect how you feel in your space.
I’ve been through this myself. Sitting in my room made me feel sad, which eventually led to feelings of depression. The memories tied to the furniture were sad, and that created a negative energy. So, I started making changes. I didn’t necessarily replace the furniture, but I began adding new decorations, better lighting, and even some electronics. I also put up posters of people who inspire me. Over time, these small changes made my room feel more positive, and it helped me feel better.

There are a few reasons why your room might be making you feel depressed. First of all, having a messy or cluttered room can add to or cause sensory overload (a feeling of overwhelm or anxiety). Many people also have more cluttered rooms when they have more cluttered thoughts. Feeling more anxious or depressed can reflect back in your room, which in turn can cause a cycle of depression. If this is the case, it can be difficult to remedy, but it’s definitely not impossible. You can start with small steps, picking up one plate at a time, or throwing away one piece of trash a day. If you have friends or family who are willing, you could also ask them for a hand in tidying up.
Another reason your room is making you feel depressed could be because the aesthetics or functionality of the room don’t match what brings you the most joy. Your room could feel uninviting, or feel like it really isn’t your room at all. It can be important to make your room into a safe space that you enjoy being in, rather than somewhere you feel trapped. You can do this by changing up the colors, changing the layout, adding decorations, or adding anything that brings you joy!
The last reason I'll touch on is isolation. If you feel like you’re constantly in your room, alone and sedentary, that could definitely be a reason why you’re feeling depressed. Humans need social interaction for their mental health, and staying in your room, especially if combined with any of the other reasons I touched on, can be detrimental to that mental health. I would suggest trying to chat with someone if this is the case, or even just to go outside and spend healthy time with yourself!
