Drowning
Relationship Stress / by goodBalsam6427

...See more I'm trying very hard, and have been for the past 10 years or so. I want a long-term relationship, and I've been on the dating apps because I have no other option, I live in a very rural town and the nearest place that has "cooking classes" or "yoga groups" is a four-hour drive away one-way. I've never ever been on a date. Today I saw a post decrying how all men want hookups and not relationships or something, and I know it's social media but it still hurt me. I'm here! I'm right here! I'm trying my best, but nobody can see me! I'm drowning in this freezing ocean with the rest of you. And then I see a whole bunch of articles saying how everybody in my generation is abandoning dating apps, my only hope for ever experiencing romance, for in-person meetups and I finally feel completely devastated, hopeless. Having to satisfy my needs with nothing but ASMR videos, porn, and whatever techno-*** AI companions get developed for the rest of my natural life is the bad end. I don't want the bad end. I want to love and start a family, but every year I'm drowning like this is another year that it feels harder to relate to other people and that I'm on a slide towards becoming an unloveable creep.

...See more I found that term on some psychology today article, and I like it more than any of the more inflammatory labels that get thrown around whenever men like me seemingly find themselves excluded from romantic relationships and dating. Bear with me as I vent for a while, I really need to. I took the "work on yourself" branch of advice for the past few years, and now at 27 years old I find myself in the best position that I've ever experienced in my entire life. I moved out of central California to a small, rural mountain town to chase my dream job, and I succeeded in getting it. Not only am I interested in the work, but I find it quite purposeful and it even helps me stay in shape. With my family's help I managed to buy a nice little house that I see myself living in for a long time. I get along great with all my co-workers, visiting their homes and doing activities together has given me the social life I never thought I'd be able to attain. There's still something that drags on my otherwise chipper mood. I'd like to go on a date with a woman. At least one before I'm 30. I never have.
