...See more There are different ways to show appreciation other than a public shout-out, a note or a quick compliment. Usually when we hear the word appreciation our minds automatically jump straight to the generic ‘Thank you’. It is encouraging, don’t get me wrong, but words are not the only language in which appreciation can be portrayed or communicated. Actions, being present and practical support speak far louder than any speech or text ever could.  Appreciation through action entails paying attention to what an individual genuinely needs and meeting them there. For example we can show appreciation by respecting someone’s boundaries when they say they are tired or don’t want to talk, holding a safe supporting space during a challenging period without rushing to offer unsolicited fixes or opinions. We can also show acknowledgement by actively protecting someone's time when we know they are burdened by heavy situations. Remembering small details about what matters to an individual, following up on something they were anxious about or simply offer reliable consistent presence when life gets rocky or unstable. I have come to the realization that non-verbal appreciation often is the strong foundation or bedrock of sustainable healthy relationships. Don’t you agree? When I give my time, emotional support or creative thoughts, I feel like I honor the individual. Through careful listening and being respectful when providing support, it gives off far more validation than a generic token of thanks. I will aim to communicate that I value the individual’s presence so much that I am willing to adjust my pace, listen attentively and actively and safeguard their well-being. It is an ongoing journey of empathy and relational awareness because what feels like a supportive act of care to one person may feel intrusive and overwhelming to another. We all receive and interpret gestures of appreciation differently too, I believe. I would like to hear your thoughts: * Is there a time you felt deeply appreciated through a small action rather than a compliment? What made that moment impactful to you? * When words feel insufficient, what are the subtle or quiet practical ways do you exert appreciation for the people in your life?

INCLUSIVE MINDSET & INTERCULTURAL MINDSET: QUIETING JUDGEMENT

...See more The definition of inclusion is ensuring that every person invited to a space feels safe, valued and empowered to contribute authentically. True inclusion is defined by the small choices we make in our daily group interactions. It also demands intercultural competence and a commitment to an open mindset, not just gathering people. Bringing people together with different cultural heritage, background experiences, communication styles and world views create the richest collaborative spaces. However, it is not always smooth sailing while working across differences. I have learned that memorizing a checklist of rules for each and every culture is definitely not intercultural competence. It requires self-awareness,humility, genuine curiosity and a willingness to learn. I should have the ability to understand that my lived experiences may have shaped my unique outlook, but it is not the only valid one. When a confusing, unfamiliar or counterintuitive communication style or opinion is presented, I practise to pause an inclusive mindset before jumping to judgement. For example some individuals and cultures value direct, explicit communication and perceive it as a sign of honesty and efficiency. Others prefer in-direct, high-content communication upholding subtlety, relational care and harmony. I will ask myself what can I learn from this perspective and how can we meet in the middle or compromise? Instead of frustrating and asking why they are doing it that way. High-emotional intelligence and the ability to sit with uncertainty, avoiding rushing into premature conclusions when things are clear cut to ease navigation of the dynamics at hand. What is a practical step we can all take in our daily interactions to foster open curiosity and mutual learning?  How do you as an individual keep your biases and subconscious assumptions when collaborating with people whose life experiences are significantly different from yours?

...See more With the learning I am currently journeying, is it just me that realised it is possible that one does not know self as much as they thought. Speak of discovering the difference between character strength that was allocated or delegated to you while growing up and understanding the individual that you are?
