APPRECIATION: SEEN, VALUED & CONNECTED

There are different ways to show appreciation other than a public shout-out, a note or a quick compliment. Usually when we hear the word appreciation our minds automatically jump straight to the generic ‘Thank you’. It is encouraging, don’t get me wrong, but words are not the only language in which appreciation can be portrayed or communicated. Actions, being present and practical support speak far louder than any speech or text ever could.

Appreciation through action entails paying attention to what an individual genuinely needs and meeting them there. For example we can show appreciation by respecting someone’s boundaries when they say they are tired or don’t want to talk, holding a safe supporting space during a challenging period without rushing to offer unsolicited fixes or opinions. We can also show acknowledgement by actively protecting someone's time when we know they are burdened by heavy situations. Remembering small details about what matters to an individual, following up on something they were anxious about or simply offer reliable consistent presence when life gets rocky or unstable.

I have come to the realization that non-verbal appreciation often is the strong foundation or bedrock of sustainable healthy relationships. Don’t you agree? When I give my time, emotional support or creative thoughts, I feel like I honor the individual. Through careful listening and being respectful when providing support, it gives off far more validation than a generic token of thanks. I will aim to communicate that I value the individual’s presence so much that I am willing to adjust my pace, listen attentively and actively and safeguard their well-being.

It is an ongoing journey of empathy and relational awareness because what feels like a supportive act of care to one person may feel intrusive and overwhelming to another. We all receive and interpret gestures of appreciation differently too, I believe.

I would like to hear your thoughts:

  1. Is there a time you felt deeply appreciated through a small action rather than a compliment? What made that moment impactful to you?

  2. When words feel insufficient, what are the subtle or quiet practical ways do you exert appreciation for the people in your life?

For me personally, a hard written note or card has the most meaning. I say that because in this day and age of email and text, a handwritten, from the heart note, no longer exists. Also, a small homemade treat shows that you put some effort into the process.
