Profound deafness

...See more I'm profoundly deaf since birth and the only one in my whole family. I know that people who are interested in deaf culture, sign language exist and also that there are people who won't call deaf people dumb, I just wish I would know more of them.  To my parents, having a deaf child is the worst, they act like they are surprised how I can even live. But they also don't seem to be very interested. None of them ever learned how to sign, which makes communication harder but it also shows how much they care.. Anyway, I just would like to get in touch with people who can understand and don't act like being deaf makes you dumb.

...See more Hello. So since this is supposed to be my life story, I'm starting from the beginning. I'm actually not that old, only 17. Well I was born deaf into a hearing family. I remember having a pretty 'normal good' childhood, with ordinary ups and downs. Things just changed as my family and I moved and I started 5th grade. I got bullied for being 'different' and those people in my class and school treated me as if I was dumb. No one ever called me by my real actual name. I was just the 'deaf kid' or 'clown'. I guess lots of people been going through bullying, and I can just really tell that hurts, I was still kinda little, I wanted to play, have fun, laugh but instead I was sitting alone at school and didn't have any friends to have around in the afternoon.   Bullying continued until grade 8, then people stopped calling me those names but no one talked to me either so it's not like anything got better. I really felt worthless and started doubting myself. Around that time, I was about 14, I developed some weird eating habits. I went from almost not eating anything, to eating really a lot but then hating myself so it basically started again. It was a circle. I believed maybe if I was at least thin people would've accept me.  But all it did was tearing me apart, mentally.  The kinda good thing is I have it under control. I do have the thinking about what if I just be really thin, more skinny, but my habits are not that extreme anymore. Isn't that a good thing? Well now I'm in my last year of school and I still have no friends in school.   But I found a few in the basketball team I'm in. And I started playing the guitar which is a really fun thing.  ( what??, yeah right! no I can't hear what I'm playing, but anyway the feeling, holding it in your hands and just playing it is wonderful)   School is still like hell. It basically is hell. But somehow I got some confident, I know a lot of people are just not educated about deaf culture, and well, some are just plain rude. Even in my family there has been sayings like go 'fix yourself', 'fix the deaf'. I'm not totally happy but not totally sad. I'm 17, I'm still trying to figure out who i truly am, who I want to be, what I want to do later. I just wish, no one would ever have to deal with bullying or any kinds of harassment.

Not deaf but not hearing either

...See more Hey there, Well this is my first post here so hello everyone (: I am deaf since birth. For other people it might seem weird not ever hearing any sound and there have been so many times I got told to 'fix the deaf'. People seriously asking me how I live.  Over time I noticed people barely know anything about deaf culture, sign language and most importantly that we are humans too, I was treated - and I still am treated this way sometimes - like I'm not a real human being, like I can't do anything myself, that I need help and I often got the impression from people that I should hate myself because being deaf is the worst thing ever. No it is not. And the only thing I can't do is hearing. I wish people would realize that. And yes I speak. Sign language is an actual language. Cochlear implant: I know that for people who lost their hearing later, people who remember what it's like to hear or people who want to a cochlear implant is great. It's honestly great that there is such a chance for them.  So what people never understand, and what even my family does not fully understands is why I don't want it. I grew up being deaf, for me it is kind of normal since I am not even used to what it's like to hear. I'm aware that hearing makes some things easier but the deaf culture is home to me and I feel like I'm totally okay with it. And with a cochlear implant - what does anyone think you are? You're not truly hearing but not truly deaf.  No people should realize even though I have a disability I can live with it and I know many other people being deaf living a good life.   Any disability you have doesn't define yourself. People with disabilities, we are so much more than this and I wish people would treat us the same as everyone else.
