Profound deafness

I'm profoundly deaf since birth and the only one in my whole family. I know that people who are interested in deaf culture, sign language exist and also that there are people who won't call deaf people dumb, I just wish I would know more of them.

To my parents, having a deaf child is the worst, they act like they are surprised how I can even live.But they also don't seem to be very interested. None of them ever learned how to sign, which makes communication harder but it also shows how much they care..

Anyway, I just would like to get in touch with people who can understand and don't act like being deaf makes you dumb.

Hey there! I'm hard of hearing and I'm very sorry that your parents aren't supportive :c mine aren't very supportive either, and not being able to communicate easily must be hard. being deaf does not make you any less intelligent than anyone that can hear at all, and I'm sorry that people make think that sometimes. Your intellectual ability and capacity has nothing to do with your ability to hear or not! :)

I feel so bad about the lack of understanding of HoH/Deaf challenges. I get angry and want to change the world RIGHT NOW! But I guess it's just the journey. I work in a job where I hope to make a difference. And I always disclose my hearing loss so as to reduce the stigma overall. Best to you, and know that you will find people who are understanding and patient.

Hey, I totally understand how it feels when people you know and love don't bother to even just repeat what they say so you can understand. My dad doesn't believe I am hard of hearing and it is so hurtful and discouraging sometimes. Please feel free to reach out if you need to talk to someone.

@realitydreams

I really relate to you. I have got hearing loss too and i know how hard it can be for person with hearing loss to live in hearing world. Yes, i also know of parents for who having deaf or hard of hearing child means a big emotional burden. However, there are also many parents who take having a deaf or hard of hearing child as a challenge and do everything to alleviate their growing up and their adult life. I hope that you find a way to cope with your situation.

I understand. I was born full deaf, and use ASL. I used to talk, because I worked my ass off for four hours every day for 13 years with my speech therapy. Then one day, I woke up and looked around before I realized that my entire family (50 people) doesn’t know sign language and I’m the only deaf person. Last week, I found out that they all face time each other everyday and text all the time. They’ve never FaceTimed me before in my life. They text me once every three months or so. Their excuse? “I don’t know sign language.”

I begged them “One new word in sign language for two weeks. That’s 14 new words. That will be more words than what you’ve said to me in a year.”

Moral of the story is last year, I shut the f up. I haven’t spoke since. My family still haven’t reached out to me. I let it all go. My happiness no longer depends on them.

I am partially deaf in my left ear and sometimes I need people to repeat what they said two or three times. Then, sometimes I still don't understand what was being said. I just let it be because it can be frustrating. I hope this helps.

Sending love to you! I became deaf 3 years ago at 31 and it has been so challenging and hard. I understand what you mean when you say you know all that positive deaf stuff exists but you wish you knew it. Same. I’m the only deaf person I know. Trying to learn sign language is hard. Then I feel like what’s the point bc I have no one to talk to. My parents esp my mom catastrophize a lot and act like I’m going to flood the house and burn it down (I lost my sense and smell and taste too) Just want you to know I care and I know the struggle!
