is it better for your mental-health to think about your feelings or not?

...See more hello, I really need to hear some people's points of view. is it better for your mental-health to think about your feelings or not? this simple question I keep turning over and over in my head, it feels like an impossible paradox. On the one hand I notice I feel so much better when I don't think about my painful feelings and you could argue that means ''I'm getting over them'' right? But on the other hand I'm afraid I'm just suppressing instead of processing them and this way they will just keep following me. everything I've learned about this in my life is so contradicting. I know the brain is made out of neural-pathways, the more a pathway is used the stronger it grows. By this logic ruminating on my feelings would just reinforce those thought patterns and give those thoughts more dominance in my brain, and likewise ignoring my feelings would then make me forget about them. I totally believe you can train your mindset to be more positive, just by not dwelling in your negative emotions. likewise you can also make yourself miserable by not letting go of these emotions. however, it is generally believed you shouldn't repress emotions and that the best way to process them is to express them. But how do I know this is true? I never really talk about any negative feelings I have, but the times I kind-of did actually made me feel worse. (despite people reacting kindly). from experience I just know I feel better when I only focus on the positive, but I'm just afraid if I ignore my painful feelings that they'll haunt me. so, how do I improve my mental-health? Doing what makes me happy or ruminating my stupid feelings, which btw feels like willingly trowing myself in an endless downwards spiral. thanks for listening to me complaining.

how to not be a dick?

...See more okay so I know I've been a dick and hurt some people in the past but it's not like I do it on purpose. I want to care and I want to be sympathetic but it just doesn't always work like that. I guess I have some issues with being emotional and stuff. anyway, now I've kinda got this reputation of being an uncaring asshole and I don't know how to explain to anyone that that's not my intension but just a result of me being incapable and stupid. when people approach me with some emotional issue it's like I switch to autopilot and immediately invalidate or diminish the issue. People think I don't care but I actually hate that this reenforces the emotional distance I have between everyone I know. has anyone been here or does anyone know how I can start to get out of this vicious circle? thanks

...See more lol I struggle so much to put any of my thoughts into words. I keep deleting and re-writing every fucking sentence. anyway, I'm really not happy with my character? idk how to explain it. I often have quite mean, judgmental, selfish or arrogant beliefs. sometimes I behave like a total asshole. there are things I've done and said that I now really regret. But also in smaller ways I feel like I'm just not really a good person. lol I find it so fucking hard to actually write what I want to say. But basically, there are a lot of big and small things in my mentality but also in my lifestyle that I kind of want to change. and well, I'm afraid it's something to do with my mental health in some way. idk. I find it really hard to think about my mental health and it's absolutely not something I really like to talk about. but I feel like I just have to get my thoughts straight because something is not sitting right. idk. so yeah, this tread is just like some documentation trying to become a little less of a dick and also get some clarity in my mind. damn fucking hardest thing I ever wrote and I'm barely even saying anything haha lol.
