AITA? Or just a coward?

...See more I have had a group of friends since high school, and we are still all each other’s best friends now, almost 20 years later. That is until I cut ties with them a few weeks back. So some background to explain. I’ve had an alcohol problem since college. I’m functional, and have only had a few periods of daily drinking. But, when I do drink, I don’t stop till I am blackout or nearly so on most occasions. My friends and I have always revolved around drinking, so it is normal for me to get drunk with them. We live a few hours of each other now, so we don’t get together often, and we’re usually celebrating when we do. Well, the past few years, there’s been some incidents. Me getting belligerent, saying things that are near over the line, breaking things accidentally, and generally making a fool of myself. Meanwhile their lives have come together in a far more meaningful way than mine has. They are all married and starting to have kids, I am single and utterly alone besides them. Well, one of them had a party recently, and invited me on the condition that I keep myself under control. It was a pre party for a German drinking festival, so I probably don’t have to explain how that went. Yeah, I did almost $300 of property damage to his stuff in a blackout tirade. I of course apologized profusely, and paid for all the damage without hesitation. He was still quite pissed, which is reasonable given that I said it wouldn’t be a problem. I know I should change, and I’ve tried extremely hard…AA, therapy, legally imposed consequences. Nothing seems to work. So, after the party incident, I decided to cut ties. These guys are my only friends in the world, but it just felt like right now, I’m better off alone. For one, I obviously can’t control myself at our social events, so maybe it is best I exclude myself. But mostly I’m tired of the shame, I’m tired of their judgement and disappointment, I’m tired of feeling like the failure, the black sheep. Maybe it partly shows cowardice for walking away from 20 year friendships instead of making more of an effort to change. But there is also nothing I hate more than being controlled, and I feel elements of that from them. Control, rather than behavior that is supportive, or gives any sign whatsoever that they give a damn about my struggle. They tell me they care about our friendship, and will always be there for me, but I never feel like that is the case. So, am I the asshole for walking away? Or are they the assholes for making me feel like a shunned black sheep, even though maybe my behavior often warrants it? Thanks for reading.

Residual psychosis, 10 years later

...See more I’m ten years out from my first episode, and six years since my last. It’s become exponentially easier to function in society...I’ve found a medication combination on which I seem to be stable and allows me to function in an intellectually demanding career. That said, I’m still a mess inside. I feel all of my recovery thus far has been learning how to act right...to fit in and bury the past...not how to think right. Yes, I’ve developed cognitive mechanisms to double think away the contradictions between normal reality and psychosis land, but that doesn’t mean both realities don’t still exist in my head. And it doesn’t mean I don’t still truly believe theories about how the two realities could be logically intertwined. I WANT that resolution. I want explanation, I want meaning, I want it all to make sense. And the fact that I can’t have those things breaks my mind every day. It creates uncertainty that keeps me from taking risks with my career. Even worse, it keeps me from connecting with, trusting, and loving others. I’ve dated so many women who have fallen for me, only to end up breaking their hearts, because deep down, I don’t trust them enough to love them. At this point I just feel like I’m using people, and I’ve turned to alcoholism at times to deal. I don’t trust anyone, because I’m not confident I won’t be going back to that place where they read my mind and control my reality, and take away every last scrap of my privacy and human dignity. And I CERTAINLY don’t trust the psychiatric profession....talking about it with them is a joke. How in God’s name do you recover from this? Am I just to make the best of broken? Is this all there is now? Thanks for listening.

Dry Drunk

...See more I stopped drinking for the first time in years this week, after getting up to 6-15 drinks average nightly. Yes, I am aware of the withdrawal risks and I am equipped to manage them. Anyway, perhaps most of this is the withdrawal depression talking, but I already feel exactly the same way I did last time I quit...that I'm just a dry drunk. Sure I can quit, but it just unmasks suffering. I can handle suffering just fine, I'm used to it. But then I know alcohol is right there, and would block this shit out again. Until I have some meaning, someone who gives a damn and offers me refuge from my demons, relapse is always on the horizon. I'm cynical...I'm broken. And I'll pretend I care from time to time like I do this week, but shit will once again hit the fan, and I'll only sink lower and care less. A part of me thinks it's already too late, my opportunities for redemption (that I would actually be able to get over my pride to accept, rather than preferring despair) have passed me by. I know. Gratefulness. Hope. Higher power. “The beatings will continue until morale improves.” I’ve tried, dammit. I’m just one of the “constitutionally incapable” wretches, apparently. Life is suffering...suffering is relative. Choose your hard...maybe my hard is balancing alcoholism with my relatively successful albeit lonely life. If I can find passable happiness and success, while forgetting my problems getting drunk nightly, then what’s the problem?
