Hey! So I dont know if this is really how you do it but, here I go. Im 27 and live at home with my mother - the economy is rough and I do pay bills and split the rent basically like a roommate would. I cant afford to live alone. I could but I wouldnt have any extra money and Id be living paycheck to paycheck and waiting for something to break me. I have health issues - stomach, joint, head, etc. - and they keep getting worse. Ive been told that it may be stress but nothing changes except my mother. Doctors say that I need to ‘make sacrifices’ but the sacrifice would be that I have no money for anything and would barely afford to live alone. I could get a roommate but then im paying $900 for a small room and I need to bring my dog. I pay for all his bills and worse, if I leave him with my mother he could scratch on the door and beg to go out and she ignores him. Making things worse, if I dont answer how she wants or start a conversation how she wants, my mom gets mad. If i sit in the living room its ‘why are you here?’ If i eat in the kitchen it aggravates her. Im not her favorite child but, come on. We had been looking for houses (with her? You may be asking why but - I dont have an answer). And she shows me houses I cant afford and then tells me that she cant pay to move or help with a downpayment so it would all be me. Weeks go by and now she says she would be willing to split because she is desperate to leave. Then last night she said that she expects me to pay for everything for her and care for her as she gets older. I tried to explain that I could barely afford now and money is one of the reasons I dont have children. I explained how I thought it was unfair to put that on just me. She said that ‘i bought all your things when you were younger’. I said that I was under 18 and it was her job (i know thats a controversial opinion but…) I asked her if thats all she had us for, childcare. She took a minute to respond. Ive tried to talk to her about certain things like - how to stop getting maggots in the trash or how to shower without causing mold to form on the cieling. She always says that im ‘trying to tell her what to do like your father’. I dont know what to do. I feel like im stuck between a rock and a hard place

😔

That really sounds draining.

It can be so conflicting living with a family member that you love but at the same time isn't very nice to you or accommodating.

And I understand why you stay.

You don't want to live in a worser situation.

I'm sorry it is causing you so much stress.

It's very honest of you to share so openly here.

I wish your mother would compromise and hear you out, so you could both look out for each other and live in peace 🩷
