Making goals

Ever since covid threw everything out of whack, it feels impossible to trust that things will “be okay” ever again. Especially because of how rough the transition to college was. Now I’m closer to my degree but just scared of everything regarding the future. Because what if things all go in the gutter again out of your control? Making any goals feels like I could be making “the wrong choice.” So I just feel like I’m drifting. But I am trying to believe harder that one day I can live on my own. Even if the idea of escaping a unpleasant situation isn’t really optimistic, it’s something. Managing expectations without being a pessimist is so hard. The only optimism I was taught is “Just follow your dreams!” “You can be anything!” “Just give 100%!” It’s harder to accept as a young adult that your dreams are less realistic than you thought. For example hard work isn’t likely going to help me join the NBA if I’m 5’3”. But optimism doesn’t have to be empty. “I can take care of myself today” is optimistic for me. What’s optimistic for you?

For me, optimism is about focusing on what can be controlled and celebrating everyday progress. It’s the quiet hope that helps us keep moving forward, even when the big picture is unclear.
