Dealing with a difficult family

I lost my dad last year and he was a great person to speak with, he would always listen and give good advice that i genuinely appreciated. My other family members are a little dysfunctional and I’m struggling with this.

my brother has mental health issues and launched an attack on my children (non of which made sense but obviously did to him). My mum and sister were aware of his plans but decided not to tell me I guess hoping not to be involved. However my brother used my mum to deliver his unkind message so I can’t help but feel hurt.

My sister decided to ignore what was unfolding but has since come into my house with my children present and had an angry outburst saying it is my issue after I had said I was struggling. She has since called again in a rage so there wasn’t even a possibility to talk rationally.

I can’t help but feel hurt and as a result I find it easier not to talk about it with my family.

my husband says I should stop wishing for a lovely family unit as there is always trouble and I should accept it for what it is.

@reevee Thank you for sharing your struggles with us here. oh, it is so hard when family members say or do hurtful things towards you, and especially to your children. It is normal and natural to feel however you need to feel about that.

I once had a sibling who was struggling, acting unpredictable and not stable. They put me and my child in a dangerous situation, so my hubs and I decided that we would stay away from them for a certain amount of time, until they were in a better place. All that to say, it is perfectly OK to protect yourself and your immediate family, by putting strict boundaries in place for those who might hurt or threaten you and your kids. Feeling safe and loved is super important.

Remember: you get to decide what types of relationship you want — or don’t want.

fwiw: your family is being crazy disrespectful and it’s not your fault.
