Holidays and family stress
Does anyone else get that knot in their stomach as we approach the holidays and family get togethers? I am grateful that we are able to be in person this year, but I can't help but have some anxiety about conversations that inevitably happen...whether it is questions on relationship status, having children, politics, or whatever else our families think should be their business, it just seems as we get older, family members feel more and more entitled to ask these probing questions in group settings.
What do you do when these awkward questions arise and all eyes are on you waiting for answers?
I could use some new ideas, thank you!
Hi. This is just a thought, but maybe invite a friend to the family gathering? That might take some of the attention off you while simultaneously giving you someone to hang out/escape with. Even better, maybe if you have a friend or acquaintance that doesn’t have much family and could be lonely during the holidays it could be fun for both of you?
@halcyonCloud2036 Hi, hope you are doing well. There was a time when i too had my share of awkward social moments regarding work, marriage and about my physical appearance (i had always been skinny and picked on). So, i preferred to keep to myself most of the time and avoided social gatherings specially with relatives involved. There is not much that i can say about how to win those situations. But, one thing is for sure that with time it will get better. I, for instance pretended not to care (although i cared too much and i still do) and gradually learned to give the best possible response or sarcasm you can say to such insensitive people. You've got to learn the hack you see. You know those frustrating situations are going to repeat themselves so learn a hack on how to deal with them. We gotta learn shortcuts, hacks to live this life. Otherwise it is going to be very difficult. I am here today, if things are better tomorrow you won't see me here. But things go worse i will be here again seeking support. It's repetitive you see. Nothing in this world is permanent. We just have to go with the flow and take one day at a time. Trust me it is going to be better. Just believe in yourself. Nothing is wrong with you. It's their attitude that is wrong. They lack compassion and empathy. So try and build up your confidence, reply to them confidently, if required fake the confidence. End of the day it is going to feel good. You will be glad.
