Family/ dating problem
Hi!
I am 19 and I belong from a stereotypical family where dating is a big NO and people here talk *** about the girls who try to date. I like a guy and we're in the talking phase. But my mom checks my phone everyday, yesterday she caught our texts and she is *** off by me (but she doesn't know we're dating). She is *** because I texted a guy. I was a bright student at school and also in college currently. What they think is dating will distract my mind from studying. But that's not the case, he pushes me to study. Even if I explained this to my mom she won't get it. She'd take my phone away. The only way I can contact him is through my phone because currently he lives far away from me. Can someone please guide me what to do 🥲
@quietPomegranate8979 Hey, it sounds like you are in a tough position, because you want to date and explore relationships, but your parents do not approve of you dating right now. Do they expect you to be single forever? Is there a magic number in which it becomes ok to date? I don't know why they are against dating, so I am wondering about that.
In the meantime, could you tell your praents that you are "just friends" with the guy you've been talking to? It sounds like you haven't known him for very long, so the relationship has not progressed to something serious yet. Would your parents be opposed to you having a guy friend?
I am also wondering if your parents are strict about friendships as well. Do they allow you to go to study groups or school events or outings? If I was 19, I would be wanting to spread my wings and show some independence. It sounds like your parents aren't ready for you to be on your own yet, and I can definitely see how that would cause conflicts.
