Teenager wanting to move out do to rules
My 16 year old has been so close to me his whole life but since he has turned 16 he has changed so much and now says my house is stressful and wants to move to his dads where it’s peaceful. I have rules and consequences at my house and his dad has noting and I know that’s why he likes it there. He gets to do what we he wants with no questions asked. How do I handle conversations with my son without upsetting him about why I have rules and the importance of them. How do I get him to understand I’m really not nagging him I’m trying to teach him how to navigate life.
Hello @amusingMaple6041,
There are several ways and techniques. The best I know is called "non violent communication". You can buy the book or attend some courses (https://www.cnvc.org/)
Active listening is also a great way of communication and 7 cups is the perfect place to learn and practice it.
Non directive coaching also offers many tools to improve your conversational skills.
Its also important to understand, respect and accept the core feelings and reasons of your son, who is starting his own way on life. No set of communication skills can turn a teenager to a kid. The biological way of preparing him to be an adult is to make him ignore their parents and start lurking for his own group and place in life.
There are many books and videos on the teenager subjet and you have one to learn from if you manage to active listen and respect him.
Best of luck. Hugs.
