55 single man having nightmares

55 and single... I live alone and sleep well except for the nightmares.  Same themes and characters from my past keep coming up.   Bullying from grade school, depressed mother from my teens, job where I humiliated myself, and these events are decades in the past.  I think the nightmares may be a message that I have unresolved trauma from this past nonsense.  If anyone cares to comment or share, that is welcome.  If you're in a similar situation, I hope you can heal.  Thank you.

@endorphin18

🥺

I'm sorry you went through this.

Often events in the past plague our sleep.

Things for done unknown reasons can be triggered.

It's difficult.

It can be hard to process things because you don't want to bring them up continually.

But you do deserve to heal.

Sending you my best wishes 💕💜

@Amanda84 - Thanks for your update.  The nightmares are not as frequent as they were before, so I think I'm improving.

Hey @endorphin18

This sounds tough and exhausting. Good on you for reaching out.

Here are a few of the things that have supported my recovery with trauma:

Grounding (connecting with the earth, best barefoot where possible)

EFT Tapping

EMDR

Breathwork

Any physical movement - dance, yoga, hiking, boxing - whatever you enjoy

Get a pet if you can 😉

This too shall pass 😊

Sorry to hear you’re struggling 😞

I hope everyone’s response helps you shed some light on what could possibly be going on, and you’ll find suggestions of ways to help alleviate some of your suffering.

I’ve heard of others having similar experiences like you’re describing due to traumatic events, and some were due to medications they were prescribed as well for various health issues.

If you happen to be taking medication for any kind of health issues, you may want to consult with your doctor or a healthcare provider just to be safe, and if you’re not, they may be able to help you out with what you’re experiencing.

@HelpintheStorm - Thank you.  I've been on the same meds for many years.  Nightmares just started.  I think I know why they started, and am taking steps to calm the bad dreams.  Thanks again

I have faced trauma like that quite a lot. Related to school days even though thats more than 20 yrs ago. Im healing though. I write a lot. That helps. It looks like a big deal in your mind but on paper it appears as bearable , something you can take in your stride. I think our trauma demands from us to evolve into more self compassionate individuals. Group support does wonders too @endorphin18

Hello, I read your post and thought I would let you know you’re not alone. I get nightly nightmares and they’re all related to past traumas. Just in this last week, I’ve started to write them down the next day. After writing them, I either meditate or just mentally send love to the me in the dream scenario. I’ve done some art inspired by some dreams - just watercolored some colors I saw in the dream and then wrote my feelings words on top of it - I feel alone/ I feel trapped, etc and then underneath that, I flipped the statement - I am supported. I am free, etc.

I felt like I needed to take the energy of the trauma and create something with it, to get it out of myself. I feel like when I hold it all in, either by trying to forget them or getting upset and angry that I’m having nightmares so often, it makes it worse. I physically need to get them out, so creating something as a response is the healthiest thing I could think to do.

I also do Emotional Freedom Technique and tap right after I wake up to calm myself down and remind myself that the dream isn’t real, it isn’t happening right now and I AM SAFE. If you aren’t familiar with EFT, I highly recommend it.

Another thing I’m trying is listening to solfeggio frequencies before bed or doing a session sometime during the day. Theres something about them that seems to tap deeper into my subconscious than normal meditation music. I’ve just started, so I can’t say if it’s affected nightmare frequency yet, but I feel like it can’t hurt at this point.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I know how painful it is. I hope you’re able to find some tools that help you find some peace..
