Hi to all the lovely people in the 50+ community. How are you doing today? laugh

The myth of multitasking

Most of us think of multitasking as a necessary part of life. How else could we possibly meet the demands of our over-scheduled, hectic lives? When aging, however, it becomes harder and harder. But, the truth is, you can only truly multitask (accomplish more than one task simultaneously) if:

One or more of the tasks is "second nature". In other words, it is so well-learned that no real thought is necessary to complete the task, like chewing gum or walking.

The tasks being performed involve different brain processes. For instance, if you're reading a book, you can listen to classical (instrumental) music at the same time, but if you listen to music with lyrics, you won't retain as much of the information you're reading. This is because both reading and listening to songs with words activate the language center of the brain. And the brain literally cannot process more than one task in any given category at a time.

Doing one task mindfully improves the quality of your work and reduces the amount of energy used. Task switching requires more energy because one has to change thoughts every time the brain has to switch.

enlightenedDo you find yourself multitasking and if so how does it work for you?

I dont multi-task except for listening to Pandora Chill Out radio while writing papers for school 😊. I do make to-do lists and try to prioritize.

@Zengrl

Thanks for mentioning Pandora Chill, just listened to it, its very relaxing.yes

Knowing what is important, what is less, what is urgent, whats not so urgent helps a lot to get through work so to-do-lists are awesome to me too.

@amiablePeace77 I don't multitask at all. Carrying on a conversation or listening to the radio while driving is difficult. Talking while cleaning up a mess in the bathroom is impossible, and reduces me to babbling incoherence if I try.

@stressBear

Bear, you don't want to get confused and giving your full attention to one thing is a good way to prevent it. yes

Because of the nature of my job, I multitask all the time. If I couldnt, I would not have a job. And I cant retire yet. Im not sure what I will do next, but I will keep trying here. Thanks.

@Lauren63

Sounds very challenging to me, I hope that meanwhile some of the things became routine or fluent to you to make it a little easier. I can only imagine how exhausting it must be, hope you get more relax time in future.
