When Odd Things Happen in Chatrooms

Yes, its true. Weird things can happen in chatrooms. Its normal. It happens all over the internet, every day.

7 Cups haschatrooms, so naturally, it will happen here.

Sometimes its a bug, sometimes its someone trying to cause harm, either way, its something that happens, which creates only a mild road block in what we are trying to achieve as a community.

Here is what you need to know:

- People making other people feel unsafe on the internet is a normalphenomenon.

- We are safe, our tech team is efficient and timely to deal with matters as they come up.

- BecauseI think it's important for us to ALWAYS remind the community of this: Your personal information is safe. These are trolls who are messing with the way the chatrooms function, not the content or any secure information.

- You can only control you! And I encourage you to do so. If something makes you feel uncomfortable, take a self-care break. No harm in that! We all need them sometimes. Things always get resolved quickly and you'll be back in the community in no time!

------> Think of it like a bully. Someone who is trying to make you feel sad, hurt you feelings, scare you, worry you...etc. You know, they are wrong, that there is no reason for them to make you feel this way.

Remember, you are in control of you and we are all in control of making 7 Cups a supportive and loving place.

Thanks for the updates and for all your hard work ^_^ I just wanted to make a quick suggestion: When the maintenance page appear because of an update or something like that , I think there should be a message that refers suicidal people to suicide.org ,1-800-273-8255 ,etc. because it could make adifference I think , even it saves one person ,it worths it.

I often see people post remarks in chat about how the word is trying to get rid of them when there's a big wait for a listener or a technical glitch. So this is a really important idea.

What about people who are (i hate to say it) attention seeking? By this I mean taking up so much of the chat that barely anyone who isn't focusing on them can be heard and get angry if the focus is given to someone else? I witnessed an entire 2.5 hours of this yesterday and it is very frusterating.

I don't know what the solution is; in an ideal world people would simply refuse these people the attention they seek. The problem is that it's hard to tell what's going on in those cases, especially if you're new to the situation. So I go in, get harassed, report and mute, but then other members try to relay messages from the person I muted, and next thing you know the room is full of chatter about the attention seeker, who is saying God only knows what about me in the meantime.
