☕ Mindful Leadership: How Being Present Can Make 7 Cups More Fun!

Hey everyone!

I came across an interesting article from the Center for Creative Leadership about mindful leadership, and it got me thinking about how we can apply some of these ideas to our everyday experiences here on 7 Cups.

When we hear the word leadership, we might immediately think about people who hold additional responsibilities, such as mentors, moderators, peer support, forum supporters, or community leaders. However, I think leadership extends far beyond the roles we hold. Every listener and every member have an opportunity to influence the environment around them through their interactions with others.

So, what does it mean to practice mindful leadership on 7 Cups?

First, what is mindful leadership?

Mindful leadership is about being present, intentional, and aware of how we interact with others. Instead of operating on autopilot, we take a moment to consider what is happening around us, how we are responding, and how our actions might affect the people we interact with.

Sometimes, we're so busy keeping up with notifications, chats, forum posts, responsibilities, and our daily routines that we forget to slow down and actually enjoy being part of the community.

The article identifies four fundamental skills of mindful leadership that I think translate really well to 7 Cups.

1. Focus: Be present in your interactions.

Focus is about giving our attention to what is happening in the moment rather than allowing ourselves to become distracted by everything else.

How can we apply this on 7 Cups?

  • When supporting a member, take the time to understand what they're sharing instead of rushing to formulate a response.

  • When participating in a forum discussion, engage with what others are actually saying.

  • When mentoring or supporting other volunteers, give them your attention and make them feel heard.

  • When interacting with other members, take an interest in getting to know them.

Sometimes, the most meaningful interaction isn't the longest one. It's the one where someone feels like they genuinely had your attention.

2. Clarity: Respond with understanding rather than assumptions.

Clarity means recognizing what is actually happening rather than viewing situations through our own assumptions, expectations, or personal experiences.

This can be especially important in an online community where we don't always have the benefit of hearing someone's tone of voice or seeing their facial expressions.

How can we apply this on 7 Cups?

  • Before responding to a message that frustrates us, take a moment to consider what the other person might be communicating.

  • If something is unclear, ask questions rather than immediately jumping to conclusions.

  • When handling disagreements or moderation situations, focus on understanding the situation rather than reacting emotionally.

  • Be open to feedback and recognize that we can learn from one another.

Not every disagreement needs to become an argument, and not every misunderstanding needs to become a bigger issue. Sometimes, slowing down and seeking clarification can make all the difference!

3. Creativity: Make room for new ideas and experiences.

Creativity is about allowing ourselves the space to think differently, explore possibilities, and find new ways to approach things.

I think this is particularly important when it comes to keeping 7 Cups enjoyable!

How can we apply this on 7 Cups?

  • Come up with fun new forum discussions, community activities, and engagement ideas.

  • Encourage members and listeners to share their suggestions.

  • Be willing to try something different instead of always relying on the same routines.

  • Collaborate with others and build on each other's ideas.

  • Find new ways to make volunteering, learning, and participating enjoyable.

We don't always have to do things the way they've been done before. Sometimes, the best ideas come from simply asking, "What if we tried something different?"

4. Compassion: Remember that we're all people behind the screens.

This one might be my favorite because compassion is such an important part of what makes a community feel welcoming.

Compassion means recognizing that everyone has their own experiences, challenges, responsibilities, and reasons for being here.

How can we apply this on 7 Cups?

  • Recognize and appreciate the contributions others make, even the little things.

  • Encourage fellow listeners and members rather than focusing only on what they could be doing better.

  • Be patient with people who are learning, growing, or adjusting to new responsibilities.

  • Celebrate other people's successes and milestones.

  • Remember to extend compassion to ourselves, too!

We all have days when we're more active than others. We all make mistakes, have things to learn, and sometimes need a little encouragement ourselves.

Being a mindful leader also means recognizing when we need to take a step back, recharge, and give ourselves some grace.

So, how can mindful leadership make 7 Cups more fun?

I think it comes down to the kind of environment we help create.

Imagine a community where people feel comfortable sharing ideas, where volunteers encourage one another, where members feel welcomed, where disagreements are handled respectfully, and where people genuinely enjoy interacting with each other.

That doesn't happen because of one person or one leadership team. It happens through the everyday choices we all make.

A mentor can make volunteering more enjoyable by encouraging a new listener. A moderator can make the community feel safer by approaching situations with fairness and understanding. A forum supporter can spark engagement by creating an interesting discussion. A listener can make someone's day by being present and welcoming. And a member can make a community more enjoyable simply by contributing positively.

Leadership isn't always about taking charge. Sometimes, it's about setting the tone through our actions.

A little food for thought!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts:

  1. Which of the four mindful leadership skills (focus, clarity, creativity, or compassion) do you think you naturally demonstrate the most on 7 Cups?

  2. Which one would you like to work on developing?

  3. What's one small thing you could do this week to make someone's experience on 7 Cups a little more enjoyable?

  4. What do you think makes a community fun, welcoming, and enjoyable to be part of?

You don't need to hold an additional role or have a leadership title to make a difference here. Every interaction is an opportunity to contribute something positive.

Let's remember to slow down, be present, encourage one another, and most importantly, have a little fun along the way!

We're not just building a community. We're contributing to the kind of community we want to be part of. ☕

@Remina

What a beautiful post.

Clear.

Concise.

Well written.

Covers everything.

Really inclusive and gives us all food for thought

I think my strength is compassion but I need to work on being able to take a step back and take the emotion out of some situations 🥰

I love that. It’s good that you know that you have to practice taking a step back. Taking a step back is very good practice as a leader. How do you think you’ll do this going forward?

@Remina

By just realising all I can do is my best and set a time limit and stick to it 🥰
