You Don’t Need to Look Perfect to Work Out

Fitness is a feel-good habit; don't concentrate on appearances.

“Online fitness is becoming more and more intertwined with performing pleasantness — and, by extension, being perceived as beautiful at all times. Whether this is positive or negative depends on the person consuming the content

While a lot can be controlled about the way we look, there is also a lot that we cannot control about our looks. A pitfall of focusing on aesthetics is that people might become preoccupied on some of these factors we can’t change. This can lead to a dangerous downward spiral of low self-confidence and high social comparison. Another pitfall is that focusing on aesthetics can distract you from the point of exercise — to maintain a healthy mind and body. Additionally, some people spend a small fortune on workout gear and clothes, so if people don’t budget well, they might overspend trying to keep up with others.

I encourage people to focus on themselves during workouts so they can be in tune with their bodies and minds. When people constantly look at others for comparison — with the exclusion of your personal trainer or group fitness instructor — they not only put themselves at risk of becoming physically hurt by using improper technique, but they also could be negatively impacting themselves. Potential issues include decreased self-esteem by comparing yourself to others, the possibility of injury by not focusing on yourself, decreased focus on your own goals, and the inability to “mind-read” someone else’s goals just by looking at them.”

Discussion: We tend to compare ourselves to others, especially to those on social media. Fitness influencers try to look their best on camera. However, when someone appears well-groomed and composed at the gym, others may mistakenly believe the exercise they are performing is effortless when it actually is fairly challenging.

Inspiration and admiration can definitely give us motivation. However, it is important to maintain reasonable expectations for ourselves. Everyone has their own unique body type, shape, and aesthetic. It’s important to remember not to strain ourselves if we don’t look like the “perfect” aesthetic. Working out is about improving your overall health, not looking perfect.

Reflection: In the modern world, we consume workout content constantly that is focused on developing a specific physique. Do you feel that within this push, is the pressure to look good while you work out?

This is soooooo important. The pressure to look good while working out is just so contradictory and detrimental to progress. People fear the gym for this, but I have never looked at anyone else while I am working out. I don't need to look good while sweating lol I am lucky to have invested in a dance pad so I work out at home and it's so liberating to not have to endure the self-conscious pressure of being among others.

Thanks for sharing this!

@Heather225

Exactly! As you said, trying to look attractive while exercising just hinders improvement. It adds a whole other set of pressure on top. It's unfortunate some people film others at the gym and feel the need to post it online. It’s normal to sweat and look a lil unkempt while we are pushing our bodies. Working out at home is a great idea! Thank you for reading! 🌺🌿

It's important to realize that everyone who looks good in the gym started from somewhere where they might not have looked as good. Building your body and maintaining that figure takes hard work and dedication. The general mindset of gym is a place of self-progress whether you're 240 lbs bulked with muscle or 90 lbs slender, everyone is working to improve themselves.

@innateJoy9602 Great article! My headphones allow me to tune out others in the gym and it does a great job of convincing me that I'm the only one there. It takes off a lot of the pressure to look good.
