Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

Hello everyone! Please join us to reflect on the impact of social media on mental health:

Advantages:

1. Noble causes- Content can be created for fundraising and supporting noble causes, which helps with raising awareness on important issues.
2. Connectivity and communities- network with other people who share similar interests, goals or ambitions. People may find comfort in knowing that they can turn to social media and internet usage due to the present global circumstances.
3. Individuals have an outlet for creativity and self-expression
4. Innovative and different sources of learning and education

Disadvantages:
1. Inadequacy about life and appearance- People may be aware that pictures they have been viewing on social media are many times photoshopped, they can still make them feel insecure about how they look or things going on in their own lives. This can negatively impact thoughts related to body image and self-esteem.

2. Fear of missing out (FOMO) - While FOMO has been around far longer than social media, sites seem to exacerbate feelings that others are having more fun or living better lives than you are.

3. Isolation- Research shows that overuse of social media impacts the level of isolation people experience as a result of comparisons to people online. Decreasing social media usage can actually make one feel less lonely and isolated and improve their overall wellbeing.

4. Cyberbullying- Social media apps can become a target point for trolling and hurting people through hurtful, offensive, derogatory comments and feedback.

All of these factors contribute to depression and anxiety. Humans are social creatures. They need face-to-face interactions. Lets hope we can return to leading our everyday lives, socialize with people in person and use time for self-reflection.The perfect images you see, the number of hearts and likes you see are merely icons and buttons. These do not describe your level of self-worth.

1. I think social media has many double edged swords. You can find both very positive groups and very negative groups online. Social media is also useful for spreading information, but it is more difficult to determine what is true or false.

2. Social media can be very consuming and make you lose touch with yourself. I might suggest that someone think of a hobby they enjoyed when they were young and pick that up again to fill the time spent on social media.

3. My anxiety tends to push me away from social media in most cases. My biggest issue is comparing myself to other moms and then I do find it helpful to take a break from certain groups.

4. Today I learned about some ADHD resources and books that I think will be helpful to me.

1. Can you share an example of 1 positive and 1 negative effect of social media?

One POSITIVE effect of social media is that you can find memes or what not that make you laugh, and put you in a better mood when you're feeling down. One NEGATIVE effect of social media, is that you can get severely bullied and harassed; which results in low self-esteem and drama.

2. Do you have any coping skills for someone who needs support as a result of being negatively affected by social media usage?

Yes, I actually do. Block anyone who starts making you feel bad, block any mutual friends you have with them as well, and remove them from your profiles!

3. Do you have any thoughts on social media detox?

I was so excited for this question because I actually finally just did this. I had MAX friends on Facebook (Which is 5,000) and over 10,000 followers on Facebook. I currently still have over 20,000 followers on Instagram. But, I started getting negative feedback which I wasn't used to, and it was deteriorating my mental health. SO, I made all my pages private, and deleted everyone off my friends list that I didn't know very well, and that I was close to. IT WAS SO HEALTHY FOR ME. Social media detoxing is SO IMPORTANT for your health, if you're struggling with negative things.

4. What is something new you learned today?

Honestly, since I was already doing this, just maintaining what I'm doing. Making sure I don't fall into old habits, and keeping everything as private as possible.

1. Can you share an example of 1 positive and 1 negative effect of social media?: One example of a positive effect of social media is that you can stay in touch with friends and family during times like COVID-19 where you can't go out. A negative effect of social media would be depression and sadness when you see people leading happy lives, such as when they post pictures of their wedding and you are not even in a relationship yet.

2. Do you have any coping skills for someone who needs support as a result of being negatively affected by social media usage? : Make your profile private, take a break from social media by deleting apps, unfriend toxic people, block certain posts, take a relaxing walk without your phone.

3. Do you have any thoughts on social media detox?: It really helps as it will make you have stable mental health.

4. What is something new you learned today?: Social media isn't all rainbows and unicorns. It has a dark side for mental health and learning when to get off it is key to good mental wellbeing.

1. Can you share an example of 1 positive and 1 negative effect of social media?

- Positive: Chance to reach out to more audience is bigger. You can meet a lot of new friends from all over the world and gain cultural knowledge. - Negative: From personal experience(which I am not proud of), I used to expect my partner and relationship to be exactly like what people on social media potray their relationships. crying

2. Do you have any coping skills for someone who needs support as a result of being negatively affected by social media usage?

- Taking a break from social media and do activities like gardening, playing board games, reading books, etc. Going private. Do not lock yourself up just to be virtually valid. Start surrounding yourself with people in real life.

3. Do you have any thoughts on social media detox?

- I think social media detoxing is as important as body detoxing. It helps you to cope better and pull you out of the addiction.

4. What is something new you learned today?

- I've learnt that social media can negatively impact not only my health, but also everyone else's.

1. Can you share an example of 1 positive and 1 negative effect of social media?

One positive is that social media that you get to meet a lot of different people, and make friends that maybe you wouldn't have been able to, like being able to talk about niche interests with other people who are as passionate as you are. One negative is that spending too much time on social media can end up warping your view on reality and lead to feelings of worthlessness because it seems like everyone else's lives are so much better than yours.

2. Do you have any coping skills for someone who needs support as a result of being negatively affected by social media usage?

I feel like this depends on the nature of the problem, so one thing I might suggest is journalling or trying to narrow down what specific aspects of your life are being impacted by social media. For example, if social media usage is causing issues like procrastination or sleep deprivation, finding tools such as apps that restrict your usage of certain websites might help. I use StayFocusd for Chrome but there are a variety of apps out there. Also, curating the content you see by following positive people and removing or blocking more negative influences.

3. Do you have any thoughts on social media detox?

I think it's a really good idea and would help brings one's priorities into better focus. In my experience, when visiting social media sites becomes an ingrained habit, you can get 'stuck' in there? Idk if this makes sense but it's like you can get sucked into negativity without realising it or end up only visiting because it's a habit and not because you're getting anything enjoyable out of it. Taking a step back can look at things more clearly.

4. What is something new you learned today?

That FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) has it's own Wikipedia article, with social media being cited as a pretty big contributor to this phenomenon. FOMO can be a big motivator for things constantly checking your messages, social media feeds, posts, etc, as you might be afraid of "missing out" if you don't check it out Right Now.

-One good thing about social media is the ability to connect with people all over the world. A not so good thing is that it isnt always the safest having your life documented for Everyone to see.

-First thing you have to block that person or people that have harassed you. If you ever feel the need to check and see if they have posted or to unblock them try and remember all of the pain they caused and how you are better than them. Dont waste your time checking up on their life.

-Personally I have never participated in a detox by choice, only by hospitalization. But that doesnt mean I wouldnt choose to do it. I think it is very cleansing for your heart and your prescpective on life. It is a challenge but is worth it.

-I learned when reading this today that I have done really good by not being tempted to check up on the people that have hurt me in the past on their social media. Im really proud of myself for that because at some point I was obsessing over every post.

Social media definitely can be good and bad for mental health. It can be good as we are all sheltering in place and its nice to connect with people even if it is online. Friends/family can post pictures, stories to make us smile. It can also be bad if someone is already feeling bad about something and get bashed online. I see people getting upset and say they need to get off social media for awhile to heal. I can understand that if you are being personally attacked. No one needs that. The key is to believe in yourself, know that what others say doesn't matter and cut off/block those that make horrible remarks.

@Teresa416 I completely agree with what you're saying. Social media can either be beneficial or harmful, depending on the way people choose to use it. Also I think parents need to be very aware of what their children have access to online, as it can a have very serious impact on children
